A detailed description of the strawberry variety festival chamomile

Strawberries can be found in almost every garden area, while the Festivalnaya variety is especially popular.

It has many positive qualities, the main of which are high yields and unpretentiousness to growing conditions, including winter temperatures.

Description of strawberry variety Festivalnaya Daisy

Strawberry bush Festivalnaya vigorous, but at the same time compact, the leaves are located quite high and closely.

Peduncles are thick and powerful, capable of supporting the weight of a ripe berry, most often they are on the same level with the leaves or slightly below them. The inflorescences are very neat, bisexual flowers.

According to the description, fruiting occurs in the middle or late periods and at the same time lasts long enough, until mid-October-early November.

The yield of the variety is very good, up to 500 grams of strawberries can be harvested from one bush. It is worth noting that the first fruits can reach a mass equal to 45 grams, while the last harvested crop will be much less (10-15 grams).

The oblong berries are bright red, while the skin is shiny and even. The neck is wide and straight. Red, small achenes are located over the entire surface of such strawberries.

The pulp is light pink, tender, but at the same time dense, due to which the variety tolerates transportation and long-term storage well.

The taste of berries is pleasant, sweet and sour with a delicate aroma. You can use these strawberries for different purposes.

The Festivalnaya Chamomile variety is famous for its resistance to various diseases and pests, but you can still see powdery mildew or verticillary wilting on such a plant. Such a strawberry tolerates winter frosts well.

Breeding history and growing region

Festivalnaya strawberry was bred in the city of Pavlovsk domestic breeders, who have been working hard for 4 years, in the period from 1954 to 1958.

The variety got its name in honor of the world festival of youth and students, which was held in 1997.

Although Festivalnaya is considered an old variety, many hybrid species have so far failed to overshadow its characteristics.

It is customary to grow such strawberries in the Central and Northern regions., in the Urals and Siberia.

Such unusual preferences are due to the fact that the variety tolerates cold well, but at the same time is very susceptible to drought and heat, so the southern areas are not suitable for growing it.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages of the variety:

  • good productivity;
  • excellent berry taste;
  • the resulting berries tolerate transportation well and are stored for a long time;
  • the first fruits boast a large size;
  • long fruiting period;
  • the variety can grow productively in partial shade;
  • the plant is not afraid of winter frosts, flower buds are not affected during frosts, and damaged bushes recover very quickly.

  • the variety is often affected by some diseases;
  • the plant does not tolerate heat and drought.

Landing rules

It is customary to carry out work on planting Festivalnaya in open ground in the spring.when the threat of return frosts has passed or at the beginning of spring. In the second case, you need to make sure that the plant has time to take root and does not freeze over the winter.

When choosing a place for strawberries, you should take into account its requirements.:

  1. Slightly acidic loamy or sandy loam soils are best suited.
  2. The site should be well lit, but at the same time protected from direct sunlight.
  3. Drafts negatively affect the plant.
  4. The groundwater level must be at least 80 centimeters.

In order to avoid the transmission of pests from predecessors, strawberries are recommended to be grown in those places where legumes, carrots, dill and parsley grew before them.

For the most successful growth of seedlings, in the fall, six months before planting, the soil is dug to a depth of 25 centimeters, cleaned of weeds and the following fertilizers are applied (per 1 square meter):

  • 5-6 kilograms of manure or peat;
  • 50 grams of superphosphate;
  • 20-30 grams of potash compounds.

Planting process strawberries in the open field looks like this:

  1. Initially, shallow planting holes are dug, the distance between which should be at least 30 centimeters.
  2. The resulting holes are watered abundantly with water.
  3. In seedlings, the roots are slightly shortened and the leaves are pinched, leaving 3-4 of the strongest and most powerful.
  4. The plant is placed so that the root collar is at ground level.
  5. The last step will be abundant watering.

If strawberries are planted in the fall, then it must be additionally covered.

Garden berry care

Caring for the Festivalnaya is quite simple and even a beginner can handle it.

Watering strawberries consists of several basic rules.to consider when taking care of:

  • watering plantings begins in April;
  • 10-12 liters of warm water are used per 1 square meter of the plantation;
  • at moderate temperatures, the ridges are watered once every two weeks;
  • in a hot period, the soil will have to be moistened every 2-3 days;
  • if there is little rainfall in the fall, watering the strawberries should be continued and repeated every 5 days;
  • during the work, water should not be allowed to fall on the plant that is in the flowering or fruiting stage.

Every 7-10 days, the beds must be carefully loosened and remove weeds. This will help them get as much oxygen as possible.

To prevent rapid evaporation of moisture and stop weed growth, the aisles must be mulched straw, grass or peat.

In order for the plant to form a powerful and viable root system, all whiskers and peduncles are removed from it in the first year of life.

Festivalnaya strawberry needs regular feeding, which is carried out according to the following scheme:

In early spring, immediately after the snow meltsComplex mineral fertilizers
During flowering, fertilizer is applied once a week.200 milliliters of bird droppings are diluted in 4 liters of water and watered with this mixture on one bush
At the end of fruitingSuperphosphate, 50 grams of which is diluted in a bucket of water

Experienced gardeners recommend feeding immediately after watering.

Festival strawberries can be propagated in several ways., but it should be borne in mind that vegetative methods most often end in success, and when germinating seeds, there is a risk of getting a plant different from the mother.

To get seedlings from seeds, perform the following actions:

  • at the end of February-at the beginning of March, a fertile mixture is prepared, consisting of equal parts of sand and peat, the seeds are moistened and laid out on the surface, which are then slightly pressed into the depths;
  • the container is covered with glass or foil and placed in a warm place, periodically airing and watering;
  • after 2-3 weeks the first shoots should appear and the seedlings can be dived into separate containers;
  • as soon as 3-4 rosettes of leaves appear on the seedlings, they can be transferred to open ground.

To obtain planting material from a mustache, it is enough to choose the most powerful and longest shoot, the rest are removed.

As soon as a root rosette is formed on it, it is placed in a separate pot and dropped into the ground, after which it is looked after like a seedling. After a few weeks, the young bush can be separated from the mother plant.

You can also use the method of dividing the bush., in accordance with which an adult plant is dug out of the ground and divided into several parts.

It is worth noting that 3-4 leaf rosettes and healthy, powerful roots should be present on each cut.

Diseases and pests

Festivalnaya strawberry, like other plants, is affected by various diseases. Most often, you can see gray rot, powdery mildew or verticillary wilting on the bushes.

DiseaseControl methods
Gray rotIn early spring, before the formation of buds, the plant is sprayed with the preparations "Topsin M", "Zuparen", "Derozal", etc. If the summer is rainy, then the treatment is repeated after flowering.
Powdery mildewAt the initial stages of the disease, the drug "Trichoderma" is effective, in the event that the disease has spread strongly, you will have to use fugnicides of a wide spectrum of action.
Verticillary wiltingIf the treatment of the disease is started on time, biological products ("Fitodoctor", "Fitosporin", etc.) can become good means. At advanced stages, Brodsky liquid or Fundazol is used.

Prevention of diseases and pests is as follows:

  1. In early winter, mulch is removed from the beds and plant leaves are removed, after which the soil is loosened to a depth of 6-8 centimeters and treated with Brodsky liquid or copper sulfate.
  2. At the end of September, plants and the ground around them are treated with the following composition:
    • 5 liters of water;
    • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil;
    • 1 tablespoon liquid soap
    • 1 tablespoon ash
    • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  3. After 2 weeks, the treatment is repeated using Brodsky's liquid.

Festivalnaya strawberry is a well-known variety of domestic breeding, which has not lost its popularity for over 50 years.

Such plants bring a rich harvest, consisting of large and very tasty berries.

Strawberry variety Festival chamomile

Festivalnaya chamomile is a non-repairable variety of garden strawberries (strawberries) of medium ripening, universal use. It was bred by breeders of the Institute of Horticulture of the Ukrainian Agrarian Academy of Sciences in the late 80s. To obtain, the varieties Redcoat and Zarya were used. The authors are K. M. Kopan and V. P. Kopan. In 1992, the bred plant was entered into the State Register of Varieties of Ukraine; strawberries are currently absent in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation. Our heroine is distinguished by excellent immunity, the ability to withstand various weather disasters, as well as a very good yield and excellent taste of berries. In Russia, the plant is recommended for cultivation in the Central, East Siberian, West Siberian and Ural regions, in Ukraine the preferred cultivation areas are Polesie and Forest-steppe.

It is worth making a small remark right away. There is another variety with a similar name, perhaps familiar to many gardeners - Festivalnaya. She has nothing to do with our heroine, besides, she loses to Camomile in some characteristics. Many sources, and many nurseries, for some reason confuse these two completely different varieties, so be extremely careful when buying seedlings. The description of the heroine of our article given below was compiled on the basis of information provided by the originator (the Institute of Horticulture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine).

The plant is medium-sized, semi-spreading, well leafy. Abundant formation. Strawberry leaves are medium in size, wrinkled, dark green color without shine. The flowers are medium-sized, white, bisexual. Peduncles of medium length, thick, very strong, located just below the level of the leaves, under the weight of ripe large fruits are laid on the ground.

The berries of the Festival chamomile are rather large, round-conical in shape with a neck, sometimes they can be slightly flattened from the sides; during the first harvest, specimens with a deep groove can often be observed. The peel of strawberry fruit is bright red with an orange tint, shiny. The pulp is bright red, medium-dense, juicy, with a pleasant pronounced aroma. The taste of the fruit is sweet and sour, one might say classic, with a predominance of sugar content. Tasters rated it at 7.8-8.3 points. The pulp of the variety contains: 9.3-10% dry soluble substances, 6.5-7.1% sugars, 1-1.1% acids, 67-78 mg% vitamin C.

The berries are versatile in use, excellent both fresh and processed, perfect for making jams, jams, and are also good for freezing. According to the originator, the transportability of strawberries is satisfactory. In general, it should be said that the Festival chamomile has not gained immense popularity, and it cannot compete with the giants of the strawberry market, so there is no need to talk about growing it for commercial purposes. On the other hand, it is very attractive for small-scale cultivation on small farms in order to sell fresh produce to the market. It is especially suitable for farmers from regions with a very problematic climate.

Fruiting in the variety is very unstable, at the first harvest the berries weigh about 35-45 grams, in the middle of the season the weight fluctuates at the level of 20 grams, and by the last harvest the fruits are no longer impressive in weight - it can drop to 10 grams. The ripening maturity of the Festival chamomile begins around the second decade of June; in different regions, fruiting can start both earlier and later. Strawberries are notable for amicable ripening, due to which the harvest takes place in a short time, besides, the plants give off the harvest quite quickly, harvesting takes 3-4 times.

According to the originator, the yield of the variety with a single-line planting was 17-19 t / ha. And these are quite decent results! Thus, it is possible to harvest about 500 grams of berries from one plant. Of course, such indicators cannot be called high at the present time, but they are not low either.

Strawberries are winter-hardy, tolerate temperatures as low as -25 ° C, but good shelter will not hurt. Frost resistance is also very good, but sharp return frosts can tell badly on plants, so again, you should take care of covering materials, if necessary. The drought resistance of Festival chamomile is excellent, it feels great in the hottest seasons, therefore it is very attractive for growing in southern regions with hot summers. Of course, the lack of moisture negatively affects the yield, so it is better not to forget about regular abundant watering.

The variety is resistant to fungal diseases, especially gray mold and white spot. Sometimes it can be affected by a strawberry mite, but not critically.In general, these strawberries are really very persistent, therefore they are very suitable for organic farming. Chemicals against diseases may not be required, folk remedies for prevention will be enough.

In agricultural technology, the Festival chamomile is very simple, it only needs the most standard care. It can even be categorized as “strawberry for the lazy”. Of course, the plants will respond to all your efforts by increasing yields and improving the taste of berries. Let's list the main nuances that should be emphasized. The most basic - do not neglect watering. The variety is moisture-loving, with sufficient moisture it shows the best results. Also, do not forget about feeding, the variety responds very well to them. And one more important point - do not neglect the removal of the mustache. Strawberries produce them in abundance and this can cause low yields.

Festival chamomile does not differ in longevity, plantings should be renewed every 4-5 years. On the other hand, many modern popular varieties do not withstand more than two years, or even a year of use, so our heroine can still be called a good long-liver. But still, you should not neglect the rejuvenation of the plantation, since with the age of the plants their yield decreases, and in the end, if you do not update the planting material, you can be disappointed in the variety.

Let's summarize a little. This strawberry is quite good, it has quite good characteristics, and most importantly, it can be successfully grown in a wide variety of climatic latitudes. Of course, you cannot call the Festival chamomile particularly outstanding, now on the market you can find an analogue to it, more fruitful and, possibly, more delicious. In addition, our heroine accidentally found herself in the shadow of another variety with a similar name. Her namesake Festivalnaya deserved rather controversial reviews, and due to the confusion in the names, Daisy herself received not entirely flattering ratings, so to speak, for nothing. But in this situation there is another interesting point. The fact is that nurseries and amateur private owners sometimes do not know what they are selling. Indeed, even on the sites of nurseries in the description of the seedlings of the Festival chamomile, the characteristics of another variety, the Festival, are often actually presented. In general, be extremely careful when buying, purchase planting material only from responsible sellers who are able to deal with their assortment.

Festival Chamomile, description of berries

  1. The berries of this variety are of irregular ovoid shape, slightly flattened on the sides.
  2. The first berries are large, weighing up to 50 grams, the next - 10-15 grams.
  3. The berry has a deep red color and juicy, sweet and sour, dense pulp.
  4. Strawberries are used fresh and processed. Compotes, jam, pie filling are prepared from it, and the berry preserves its appearance and useful qualities when frozen.
  5. Strawberry Festivalnaya Chamomile, well transported and retains its taste during long-term storage.

Growing and care

When caring for the Festival chamomile, standard agricultural techniques are used. Observe it without fail, otherwise you will not achieve good productivity.

The plant will respond to an increase in moisture content with diseases, to a decrease - by a deterioration in taste characteristics and a decrease in yield. The frequency of watering depends on the weather, usually in dry hot weather, watering is carried out every 3-4 days. On cloudy days - once a week. For irrigation, use settled warm water. Watering is carried out at the root, trying not to wet the leaves and peduncles. In late autumn, abundant water-charging watering is carried out, which will prevent the roots of the plant from freezing.

Loosening, weed control

The root system of strawberries is located in the upper layers of the soil, therefore, loosening is carried out to a depth of 5 cm. Simultaneously with loosening, the rudiments of weeds are removed. Mulch allows to reduce the labor intensity of work, because will reduce the number of watering, get rid of loosening and weeds. You can use organic matter: straw, sawdust, coniferous, leaf litter or synthetic black nonwovens: spunbond or agrospan.

Mustache removal

For good yields, all mustaches should be trimmed before the horns develop on them. Leave them only on bushes intended for breeding.

Top dressing

Strawberry Festival chamomile is responsive to regular feeding:

  • Fertilizers are applied for the first time in early spring. It can be cow dung diluted 1:10, bird droppings (1:20) or a solution consisting of ammonium nitrate or urea (1 tablespoon per 10 liters of water). 0.5 l is enough for a bush. liquid top dressing.
  • The second feeding is carried out before flowering. A glass of ash is poured with boiling water, filtered, poured into a bucket and brought to a volume of 10 liters. Add 30 drops of iodine. Consumption per plant 0.5 l.
  • In the summer, strawberries are fed several times with infusions of herbs - nettle, burdock, mint, wormwood, garden weeds. The herbs are kept in a barrel for a week. Such feeding will provide the plant with the elements necessary for full growth and fruiting.

If the soil is not too fertile, superphosphate is added in the fall. Nitrogen mixtures before wintering are undesirable, so as not to provoke growth.

Pest and disease control

The variety has a high degree of resistance to powdery mildew and many other diseases of berry crops. Festival chamomile is valuable because it is possible to grow environmentally friendly products without the use of chemicals.

If necessary, you can use folk remedies for prevention:

  • plant garlic in the beds
  • 2 times per season, treat the bushes with a solution of mustard powder
  • Spray the leaves with a light pink manganese solution 2-3 times a month.

Do not plant other varieties of berry crops prone to disease next to strawberries Festival chamomile, so as not to provoke an epidemic

Preparing for winter

Before wintering, they carefully examine the Festival chamomile plantation, remove damaged leaves and stems. The variety normally tolerates a drop in temperatures down to -25 ℃. In most regions, it is able to overwinter without additional protection, under the snow.

Before you start growing this strawberry variety, you need to prepare a plot. Strawberries like to grow in a well-lit area with no strong winds and fairly dry soil. Strawberry "Festival chamomile" does not like sandy or clay soils. Experts recommend planting crops in areas where tomatoes or potatoes used to grow.

Watering is done as the soil dries up. At the same time, it is recommended to choose evening or morning for watering. Before the beginning of fruiting, you can water it by sprinkling. After the berries appear on the plant, it is recommended to add moisture to the root.

To ensure optimal nutrition of the root system, it is recommended to periodically loosen the soil on the site, as well as remove weeds from it, which absorb useful components from the soil and remove moisture from it, which negatively affects the growth of strawberries. After watering the garden bed, it is recommended to mulch it with grass or straw. Top dressing is usually done with mineral fertilizers after planting. No fertilization is recommended during fruiting.

In the fall, the leaves can be cut off if necessary. But this can affect the fact that insects and other pests or pathologies appear on the stems. To prevent this from happening, it is recommended to plant garlic or onions next to it.

Strawberries propagate by dividing bushes, seeds and rooting of a mustache. Each gardener chooses the best breeding method for him, depending on preferences and conditions.

If you wish, you can grow this crop with seeds, but this is a rather painstaking and long-term occupation that requires certain skills and knowledge from gardeners. At the same time, seeds can be bought from trusted suppliers.

Seeds are planted in early February in special boxes. To accelerate germination, it is recommended to cover such boxes with glass or film, creating structures like micro-greenhouses. Experts note that preparation of material for disembarkation can be done at a convenient time of the year, if there are the necessary conditions.

It is noted that this variety can be affected by some diseases. For example, a spider mite settles on leaves and eats them, sucking out the juice. As a result, the leaves become deformed and rot. When pests appear, it is recommended to treat the bush with karbofos. Some experts recommend sprinkling with a garlic solution that is made from ingredients at home. You can also use tobacco infusion.

If snails or ants appear on the bushes that eat berries, then there is nothing to help such a bush. In extreme cases, it is recommended to sprinkle the ground around the bush with soda.

Other standard agricultural techniques are also used in the care, among which regular watering and top dressing can be noted. Fertilizers are recommended to be applied two to three times per season. After that, you need to loosen the soil and mulch it. In order to get the highest yields, it is recommended to periodically remove the mustache on the bushes, leaving small shoots. Such procedures are recommended to be performed after 4 years of fruiting plants in one area.

How to prepare Festivalnaya for winter?
Before the onset of cold weather, strawberries should be fed with potash fertilizers. Potassium helps to strengthen immunity and good wintering. Also, strawberry bushes need to be covered with soil, a metal or wooden frame should be made. With the arrival of winter, agrofibre is pulled onto the frame.

What diseases, besides gray rot, are these strawberries susceptible to?
"Festivalnaya" has an average resistance to verticillary wilting, powdery mildew. It is also often damaged by strawberry mites and nematodes.
