Making vertical beds: analysis of the 3 best ways to arrange

When there is not enough land on the plot, but you want your own vegetables and herbs, housewives use the third dimension - height. Its parameters are not limited, and you can create at least five-story structures for growing garden crops. It was because of the shortage of land that an intelligent person once invented vertical beds. True, at first they were designed exclusively for flowers and were used by the townspeople on balconies and loggias. But the idea was quickly picked up by smart summer residents, having figured out that vegetables can grow in such structures. In addition, the unusual appearance of the beds gives the landscape a piquancy, attracting the attention of neighbors and people passing by. Let's try to figure out in what ways you can quickly and easily create a vertical bed, and what crops coexist in such conditions.

Features of caring for plants in vertical beds

It is not difficult to create vertical beds with your own hands, but you must understand what conditions await plants in such structures.

Positive points:

  • For housewives, vertical structures are a great way to relieve the arms and back, because weeds will not grow in containers (they simply do not have enough space there).
  • Due to the lack of contact with the ground, plants will less likely to get sick with fungal infections, which means that less chemical treatments will be needed.
  • During frosts or hurricanes, many vertical beds can be temporarily moved to a farm building, thereby preserving the future harvest.
  • With the help of containers, you can decorate an ugly fence or barn wall, thereby improving the aesthetics of the site.
  • Saving space: if you move part of the garden to vertical beds, then there will be room for arranging a recreation area or flower beds.

Disadvantages of a vertical vegetable garden:

  • In containers, the root system of plants is limited in nutrition, since it contains a small amount of soil. Therefore, feeding with this method of cultivation is carried out more often.
  • The earth dries up faster, so the plants are often watered, and if they are at the dacha only on weekends, they create a drip irrigation system. It is recommended to dilute the soil with hydrogel, which retains moisture longer than the soil.
  • Perennial crops with this method of cultivation can freeze out in harsh winters. Therefore, they create mobile structures to hide the garden for the winter in a farm building.

When caring for a vertical bed, housewives do not need to weed out weeds and fight pests, because due to the lack of contact with the soil, they become much less

The darker the material of the containers for the vertical bed, the faster it dries in the sun, which means that frequent watering is required

Options for creating vertical beds for different crops

During the existence of the idea of vertical beds, summer residents have invented a lot of interesting designs, many of which require the simplest consumables.

Method # 1 - growing in containers

The most accessible way for summer residents is fixing containers on the support. They are bought ready-made in stores or made from boards. Or you can even collect empty plastic bottles to create vertical beds and make containers from them. If bottles are used, then the neck is closed with a cork, and an oval hole about 5 cm in length is cut out from above, the containers are nailed in an artistic order to the wall or fence, filled with soil and the seedlings are planted.

All options with containers do not provide for drip irrigation, therefore, adding a hydrogel to the soil is a prerequisite for a comfortable life for plants.

An old chest of drawers can be an excellent container if you pull out its drawers to a different level, and the white color will reduce the heating of the wood.

Method # 2 - vertically placed pipes

When creating vertical beds for growing strawberries, most often they build a structure from barrels or plastic pipes, which will last for several seasons. Let's take a look at how a similar strawberry hostel is created.

When creating a vertical bed for strawberries, it is important to think about drip irrigation, because berries require a lot of moisture during the ripening period.

Work progress:

  1. To create one vertical structure, you will need two plastic pipes of the same length and different diameters. One is thin, for creating drip irrigation, the second is the thickest you can find.
  2. In a thin pipe, using a drill, we drill many holes through which water will flow into the ground. Leave the lower part (about 10 cm) intact.
  3. In a thick pipe, mark the future seedling holes in a checkerboard pattern. Usually they are arranged in three rows: a central one and two side ones (the back wall will be attached to the support). There is no need to make holes at the bottom (10 cm).
  4. We drill holes using a drill with a nozzle and a chisel. The diameter of each is about 5 cm (taking into account the thickness of the pipe).
  5. From below we put a plug on a wide pipe and attach the workpiece to the support (fence, wall, mesh, etc.).
  6. To protect against soil ingress, we wrap a thin pipe with burlap or non-woven material and rewind it with twine.
  7. We wrap the lower end of the pipe with tape or rubber so that water does not leave the structure.
  8. We insert a thin pipe into a thick one, hold it so that the inner one is exactly in the center, and fill the inner space to the first holes with gravel or expanded clay.
  9. Mix ready-made or self-made soil with hydrogel and crushed foam. Foam balls will prevent the soil from compacting and will provide free air access.
  10. We plant prepared seedlings, the roots of which should be dipped in a clay-dung mash in order to better keep moisture.
  11. We fill the inner pipe with water.

In the conditions of the northern regions, such beds can be made in the form of free-standing racks, connecting three or four pipes into one frame. Then for the winter you can clean the garden in the shed so as not to freeze the roots.

Having mounted such a vertical bed of plastic pipes fixed by a house, you can always move the structure to another place or hide it for the winter

Method # 3 - pocket vegetable garden

A very profitable idea is to create a pocket vegetable garden, i.e. a vertical bed, resembling a piece of cloth with many pockets. This technology was invented by agronomists and demonstrated it at one of the exhibitions. The material for creating the pockets is thin foil-lined insulation. Due to the shiny surface, it reflects the sun's rays and does not overheat the soil, and on cold days the polystyrene layer will additionally retain heat, warming the roots. Such vertical beds are suitable for cucumbers, beans, herbs and the same strawberries.

The technology of creating a "pocket garden":

  1. We buy double-length insulation. That is, if you want to create a bed 2 meters high, then you need to take 4 meters of material.
  2. Fold the insulation in half and sew a horizontal line at a distance of 5-7 cm from the top. This drawstring is needed to hang the garden bed.
  3. Next, we cover all the edges and bottom of the insulation, creating something like a bag. The top 5-7 cm around the edges do not need to be overlaid.
  4. We draw the surface into rectangles, from which we will create pockets. It is advisable to make no more than 3 pockets per meter of insulation so that more soil can be placed in them.
  5. Sewing all the markup.
  6. In each resulting rectangle we cut a hole at the top, leaving 3-4 cm from the seam.It is advisable to cut it not in a straight line, but in a semicircle, so that a kind of valve is obtained on top. On it, when watering, water will flow into the pocket.
  7. When all the pockets are cut, we hang the bed on the support. To do this, insert a plastic tube with a twine inside into the upper drawstring.
  8. Outside, we twine the twine to the knot, making a loop. We hang the entire structure for it to the support.
  9. We fill each pocket with a nutritious soil mixed with a hydrogel.
  10. We spill the soil with water and plant seeds or seedlings.

The mobility of the fabric bed allows you to place it on any support, even when entering your own summer cottage, fixing it to the doors with several hooks

The pockets in the bed of insulation should not be too small, otherwise the plants will lack nutrition and dry out quickly

In foil pockets, not only cucumbers and strawberries grow well, but also indoor flowers that can be taken outside in summer.

If you water the vertical beds on time, you can achieve not only a good harvest, but also lush vegetation, which will decorate your site.

The best options for vertical beds and flower beds in the country and in the garden

Suspended and vertical ground beds are an excellent solution to save space, and a properly selected soil mixture and optimal soil moisture contribute to higher yields.

Many options for vertical beds allow you to choose the most suitable model for arranging in a country house or a personal plot, based on specific possibilities.

Gardeners often cannot afford to have a large greenhouse in the garden, and in this case, vertical beds are saved.

Crops for growing in hanging and vertical beds

Light, mobile beds with low soil volume are only suitable for annual crops. Perennials with a small root system for the winter migrate to apartments or houses.

Since the soil and soil mixture for vertical and overhead beds are prepared individually, you can choose a composition that is suitable for growing almost any crop. Therefore, the main issue is the location of the plant in space.

In this regard, compact plants of strawberries, radishes, beets, carrots, lettuce, spinach, green and flower crops are most suitable for vertical ridges.

Cucumbers, pumpkins, beans, peas, peppers require a little more space - a bag or hanging crop, as well as high vertical ridges of construction mesh, are suitable for them. For tomatoes, there is a vertical arrangement technology with roots fixed at the top and shoots hanging down.

The advantages of hanging and vertical beds:

  • There is no need for heavy work on digging soil, weeding ridges and tying plants
  • In suspended ridges, irrigation water is supplied directly to the roots of plants, water is not consumed for evaporation, so significant savings can be achieved
  • The crop does not come into contact with the soil - the fruits are clean, not affected by pests and diseases
  • Obtaining environmentally friendly products, since on vertical beds you can do without chemical treatments
  • Good heating of the ridges and the possibility of obtaining an early harvest, even in the most northern regions
  • Lightweight models of vertical ridges are highly mobile, if necessary, they can be removed into the house, greenhouse, on the veranda or under a canopy
  • You can choose crops taking into account the requirements for illumination: on the upper tiers, grow plants that do not tolerate shading, and on the lower ones, on the contrary, shade-tolerant
  • Possibility of choosing design solutions and creating a unique garden.

Constructions of vertical and suspended ridges:

  • Suspended horizontal boxes of various depths with open soil
  • PVC sewer pipes, located one above the other in the form of a ladder in 3-5 tiers with closed soil and an internal irrigation system
  • PVC sewer pipes, suspended vertically with an internal irrigation system
  • Vertical beds in the form of pyramids with wooden, plastic, metal sides or any other material with 3-7 tiers
  • Vertical ridges from car tires
  • Hanging bins, buckets, pots
  • Vertical ridges made of construction mesh
  • Plastic bottle constructions
  • Vertical racks with containers installed on them
  • Old furniture, such as drawers pulled out to different depths
  • Vertical wall up to 30 cm wide, reinforced with slate or other building material with holes for plants along the entire height of the wall
  • Flower pots strung on a thin pipe
  • Rows of tall bags filled with nutrient soil.

Let's consider the most interesting types of vertical ridges in more detail.

A bed of hanging buckets, tanks, plastic containers and pots

Bed-pyramids

It is advisable to arrange a multi-tiered vertical bed in the form of a pyramid in a sunny place in the garden. It can include from 3-4 to 6-7 tiers, while saving the garden space by about 2-2.5 times.A pyramid with flowers, strawberries, herbs or vegetables will become the property of the garden, it will look very attractive and stylish.

A triangular, square or pentagonal pyramid is best created with wooden planks. But you can also use plastic, metal, or pour concrete curbs.

The last option looks the most aesthetically pleasing, the concrete is durable and the whole garden bed will last a very long time.

The width of the steps should be chosen depending on how the care of the plants will be carried out: you can work while on the path, if the pyramid is not wide, or you can move along the steps - for wider and higher pyramids.

If all tires are of the same diameter, then they can be laid with a shift - in steps, and if this is not possible, then the plants can be planted in holes cut in the tires along the entire height of the pyramid in the vertical plane.

Watering such a vertical bed is best done through a plastic pipe, which is installed in the center of the bed and tires are strung on it, like on a children's pyramid.

Holes are made in the irrigation pipe along the upper 2/3, then it is wrapped in textiles so that the holes are not clogged with soil and roots.

Vertical beds from bags

To maximize space savings, vertical beds can be quickly built from ready-made natural or plastic bags. Such beds are heavy, so it is better to place them on the ground, leaning against a fence or wall.

DIY landing bag

You will need material for a bag in the form of a rectangle twice as long as the estimated size of the bag, with a width of, for example, 30 cm, on each side there are allowances for seams of 2 cm.From such a piece of material, you will get a bag with a diameter of 20 cm.

The side seams need to be stitched, the material turned out and stitched again, that is, a double seam should be made. If polyethylene is taken as the material, then it can be connected with a special device. Then the bag is filled with nutritious soil, and cuts are made along its height for planting.

The only drawback of bag ridges is their fragility.

They can be made from the remnants of a chain-link mesh, gabion or plastic mesh. The mesh is rolled up, the diameter is chosen based on which plant will be planted - from 40 to 80 cm.

The top edges are secured with knitting wire. The mesh cells must be overlaid with straw so that the soil does not fall out.

Such ridges are good for potatoes, they can be added during the period of tuberization, as well as for pumpkins and cucumbers.

Hanging gardens from plastic bottles

"Pocket beds"

It is believed that such beds were invented by agronomists, who made them from foil insulation. The material must be folded in half so that the fold falls on the bottom, sewn or fasten the edges in width in the form of a long, but shallow bag. Leave a place on top for threading the twine, on which the bed will hang.

For one meter of the length of the bag, you can make three pockets, sew along the marking lines, then make semicircular slots, stepping back about 3 cm from the seam. When watering, moisture will drain along the cut valves, so a semicircular slot is more convenient than a straight cut. A thin tube can be inserted into the upper link and the twine can be pulled through it. Fasten the ends of the twine to the support.

Nutrient soil is poured into the resulting pockets and plants are planted.

How to make a vertical plastic pipe bed for strawberries

Before making such a bed, you need to think about how to mount it vertically so that it holds firmly and is easy to maintain. Most suitable for fixing greenhouse frames. You will need two pipes: an external sewer with a diameter of 150-200 mm and an internal - small diameter - irrigation with holes, wrapped in a cloth.

Holes are drilled in the outer pipe using a crown with a diameter of at least 5 cm, strawberry bushes are planted in them. The lower edge of both pipes is sealed with a foil. The very first layer from below is drainage, soil is poured onto it from above, during filling it is constantly rammed tightly.

This design of a bed made of PVC pipes is very durable; for planting, you need to choose remontant highly productive varieties of strawberries.

The above convinces us that hanging and vertical beds allow you to harvest even in a very small space, and are also an unusual and striking design element.
