Merchant's wife is the first officially registered variety of Zemluniki

The Kupchikha variety belongs to a rare species: it is not a strawberry or a strawberry, but a not so long ago created culture of the "earthworm". As you can imagine from this term, the berry is a hybrid of strawberries and strawberries, which means that it should exhibit the best qualities of both related crops. The merchant's wife is a very young variety, but many gardeners strive to acquire seedlings and plant them in their plots.

Description of the strawberry variety Kupchikha, its characteristics

The term "earthworm" appeared about half a century ago, when the first specimens of a hybrid of garden strawberries and real forest strawberries were obtained. The genes inherited by the new garden culture from their forest ancestors allowed it to bear fruit with sweet and aromatic berries even in inclement weather. But in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation for a long time there was not even such a section of Zemklunik. It was organized only in 2017, when the Kupchikha variety was registered.

The originators of the variety were the Institute of Horticulture and Nursery (VSTISP) and the Bryansk Agrarian University, where, in fact, the creators of the variety work under the leadership of Professor S.D. Kokino near Bryansk is the stronghold of VSTISP. Zemklunik variety Kupchikha approved for cultivation in all climatic regions.

The merchant's wife does not belong to the remontant varieties; it ripens in the medium term. In the middle lane, the first berries are harvested in early July. Bushes are spherical, medium size, up to 25 cm, with a large number of leaves of normal size. The leaves are green, strongly wrinkled, shiny. It is by the wrinkled and highly ribbed shape of the leaves that this variety can be recognized. It forms a little mustache, therefore it reproduces not only by them, but also by dividing the bush or seeds. The whiskers present are of medium size and light red in color. The flowers are white, large, the plants bloom abundantly and beautifully. Peduncles are tall, densely pubescent, flowers are formed at the level of leaves. The stalks are thin, of medium length.

The number of berries on the bush is huge

The berries have a shape that is very different from the shape of most varieties of garden strawberries, more like wild berries. They are almost cylindrical, with a well-defined neck, up to 4 cm long, in a state of full ripeness they are painted in a dark red, even ruby color. However, ripening proceeds unevenly: if the berry is "motley", it means that it is not yet quite ready for picking. The average weight of the berries is 3.7 g, but there are also real giants that grow up to 17 g. The berries are colored inside the same as outside. The pulp is dense, contains little juice, sweet, aromatic, with nutmeg notes. Taste assessment, according to tasters, 5.0 points.

In tests, which continued since 2014, in field conditions, an average yield of 135 kg / ha was obtained. The experience of growing in private gardens is still limited; indicates the possibility of collecting about 500 g of berries from the bush. The variety is characterized by high heat resistance, average winter hardiness and drought resistance. Disease resistance is above average. The high density of berries allows you to transport the crop over any distance.

The actual appearance of the berries does not quite correspond to the official formulation of a cylindrical shape. The correct shape is not found in every specimen of the berry: many of them are quite bizarre, they represent both ridges and fans, and, as it were, grown together from 2-3 pieces of berries. The color is similar for all: in an immature state it is uneven, in a fully ripe state - from dark red to burgundy purple. Size - smaller than most garden strawberries, but larger than wild strawberries.

Merchant's berries are mostly irregular, large, dark red

Advantages and disadvantages, features, differences from other varieties

The merchant's wife is the only zemluniki variety registered in the State Register of the Russian Federation for today. You can get truthful information about other varieties only in special literature. In total, more than a dozen varieties are known, but the Merchant's wife can only be compared with relatively new ones that have appeared in recent years, and mainly through the efforts of the same Kokin collective. The fact is that it is with them that the berries are significantly larger than those of the varieties obtained in the last century.

So, one of the large-fruited is the earthworm with the name Kroshka, which bears fruit with berries weighing up to 25 g. Slightly smaller than the berries of the Vityaz variety, but it has a very high winter hardiness. The most winter-hardy is the Solovushka variety, which is also very productive. The most large-fruited variety is considered to be of great interest, Kokinskaya Selected. However, it is the Merchant who receives the highest tasting marks, which should be considered her peculiarity.

In fact, Baby is not that baby.

The advantages of the variety are:

  • not the most record, but stable yield;
  • great taste of berries;
  • versatility of use;
  • high density of berries, making it easy to transport the crop;
  • the strength of retention of ripe berries on peduncles;
  • a moderate amount of whiskers, which does not complicate the care of plants;
  • 100% berry setting without artificial pollination;
  • increased heat resistance;
  • tolerance for slight shading.

The Merchant's overriding berries do not crumble, but dry out a little, become like candied fruits. They seem to be waiting for their busy owner, who for some reason could not appear on the site in time. The only drawback of gourmets is the almost complete absence of sourness in the taste. In addition, at the moment, the disadvantage can be considered the fact that it is very difficult to find a real planting material, not a fake, but this is not a disadvantage of the variety, but rather of the organization of production.

Using the berries of the earthworm

The Kupchikha variety is considered universal in use, but, despite the highest tasting rating, fresh berries can hardly be considered outstanding. Still, we are used to the fact that strawberries and strawberries should have at least a slight sourness, and in Kupchikha's berries, 5.8% of sugars account for only 0.6% of organic acids. Therefore, the most interesting are the processed products of this berry.

Almost everything can be made from it: jam, compotes, dry jam, candied fruits, liqueurs. To get real wine, there is not enough acidity, and this dugout gives not enough juice. But it can be dried, while it retains all the nutrients and almost does not lose its aroma. And the best way of harvesting for the winter is freezing.

Candied fruits are one of the most delicious processed products of the earthworm

Growing earthworms

Planting and caring for a dugout is carried out in the same way as most varieties of garden strawberries. It is important to find non-falsified planting material, but this is still difficult to do. It is advisable to buy bushes in containers with a closed root system, if possible, from the manufacturer of the variety. If there are bushes on the site, you can propagate them in any way: mustache, dividing the bush, seeds. The merchant's wife can be planted as separate bushes, with a distance of 40-50 cm between them, and a carpet. In the second case, the berries are smaller, but the overall yield is higher. It is assumed that in one place the variety can normally bear fruit for up to 5-6 years.

The Merchant's strawberry is heat-resistant, but its drought resistance is moderate. Therefore, it is watered as usual: before the berries ripen, the soil must be constantly moist, with reddening of the berries, watering is reduced. The soil is kept loose, free from weeds. They try to use organic fertilizers in top dressing. Fertilize plantings in early spring, just before flowering and at the beginning of berry pouring: first use mullein infusions, then cut grasses. After harvesting, an infusion of wood ash is added. It is convenient to keep the garden bed under a layer of clean mulch to avoid contamination of the berries.

Even before flowering, the garden bed is covered with clean dry materials.

Shelter for the winter is required in cold regions: usually a normal layer of snow is enough. In snowless regions, with the approach of winter, coniferous spruce branches are thrown onto the garden bed.

The merchant's wife is the only zemplunnik variety registered in the State Register of the Russian Federation. It can be grown everywhere, has very tasty berries, and is relatively undemanding to care for.

Strawberry variety "Festivalnaya" - description and photo, yield, gardeners' reviews

The share of strawberries, or rather garden strawberries, accounts for about 70% of the world's berry production. The history of growing strawberry marshmallows

Strawberry Zephyr is relatively little known in Russia, although it has been popular in Europe for a long time. This variety originated in Denmark, and since the mid-1960s has been actively cultivated in Norway, from which we can conclude that this variety is well suited even for harsh climatic conditions. It can be cultivated both in open ground and in greenhouses. Due to its high yield and good transportability, it is suitable for commercial cultivation.

Harvest strawberry Marshmallow suitable for industrial cultivation

The advantages and disadvantages of culture

  • excellent dessert taste
  • dense pulp, thanks to which the berry does not flow, is well stored and transported
  • abundant fruiting
  • quick picking due to easy berry separation
  • ripening period, excluding damage to flowers and ovaries by recurrent frosts
  • berries do not crumble from overripe
  • stable yield
  • high resistance to external factors: diseases, frost, heat, shading, pests.
  • slight mustache formation, which is barely enough to update the beds
  • variety of berries
  • an abundance of peduncles, requiring rationing of the crop
  • in cold regions, the berry sometimes does not have time to ripen.

Large-fruited strawberry varieties

Dessert crops are of great interest. In the proposals of breeders from different countries, you can find a species that provides any requests for cultivation in different climatic regions of the country. In the first season, one strong peduncle is formed, on which berries weighing up to 150 g grow. Bushes are powerful, spreading, characterized by rapid growth.

The advantage of Chamor is long-term, high yield, transportable qualities of very large berries, resistance to many diseases and pests.

Zenga Zengana

Photo: Zenga Zengana strawberry variety

It is considered one of the most common species among gardeners in Russia, obtained by German breeders. The climate of central Russia makes it possible to grow early varieties of Zenga strawberries. An important advantage is its resistance to various diseases and pests. Known to many, sweet, large cone-shaped fruits are remembered for their bright red pulp, thick peel, which allows them to keep their shape when freezing, cooking compotes.

An ancient species known as the 1890 development by US breeder Marshall F. Ewell. A universal type of berry with an average ripening period and is now popular among gardeners in many countries. Sometimes called "Moscow Jubilee". Received by domestic breeders 50 years ago. Differs in large berries, aroma, high taste. A scallop-like shape, berries often form due to the joint growth of closely spaced flowers. This explains the appearance of very large berries on a medium spreading bush of compact size. Shirokokonicheskie bright fruits of red color, not darkening during storage, have a pleasant dessert taste, delicate aroma. Fruits are large in size, reaching 70 g, dry, well withstand transportation. The bush forms a small number of whiskers.

Galya Chiv civ

Having appeared on the berry market, a variety of Italian-bred strawberries made a lot of noise. There is a controversial opinion about him, since the number of pros and cons of strawberries is approximately the same. The late variety is positioned for cultivation in continental climates. It is recommended for small farms due to its low transportability. Vigorous, spreading bushes throw out large peduncles. The number of whiskers is small. Large, glossy berries are colored red-orange and weigh 20-70 g. Delicate aroma and sugariness of the fruit complete the picture.

Strawberries have a table purpose and are mainly consumed fresh.

Reviews: what do gardeners say?

The variety of gourmets, collectors and farmers, the landowner Kupchikha received mostly enthusiastic reviews. Disadvantages in the form of an abundance of whiskers, protruding achenes do not count: it is ideal - say the owners of the miracle berry. The taste delights everyone: ideal for the garden and for sale. Only the inhabitants of the northern regions are enchanted: there is no promised sweetness, there is no resistance to frost and thaw.

The largest specimens reach 20 g.

It compares favorably with foreign varieties: it is adapted to the continental climate, it is not an intensive type variety - it does not require high agricultural technology. And yet - it does not degenerate in the second or third year, like the Dutch, Italian forms that lead in a one-year culture. In general, the Merchant's wife can be recommended as an excellent variety, delighting with a luxurious berry and a truly merchant's harvest.

Victoria Nikolaevna

Despite the low frost resistance, we grow Asia in Siberia. An excellent variety - berries are large, up to 40 grams, with a beautiful shiny surface, juicy and very tasty. Excellent presentation, quickly sold out on the market.

Vasily Alexandrovich, Saratov

The variety requires care, but fully compensates for the care. Very large, beautiful berries, some of 55 grams and more. The taste is simple but good. The berry is sweet, despite its large size, moderately dense. Well transported. Of the minuses - instability to gray rot, if the year is rainy, this can be a problem.

Lyudmila, Tula

We have been growing Asia for many years. An excellent variety, one of the largest and most delicious. I use my mustache for breeding. The younger the bushes, the more whiskers they give, so I keep a few young plants for propagation. Three-year mustaches practically do not give. Requires maintenance like any commercial strawberry variety.

Sergey, Omsk

Growing Asia for sale. Flies away at the market, excellent presentation, sweet, buyers know it. Every three years I update the beds, my own seedlings, the variety gives enough mustache.

Galina, Voronezh

A good fruitful variety with a record large berry. The taste is simple, but pleasant, sweet. The pulp is fleshy, juicy. Asia is a rather capricious variety that requires good care. I carry out treatments with phytoverm, be sure to water if there is not enough rain. You can keep it in one place for no more than three years, then it degenerates. There are enough mustaches, but when the bushes grow old, they are almost nonexistent. Therefore, for reproduction, you need to prepare seedlings in advance.
