If you want the garden to be protected from the attacks of gluttonous slugs in the coming season, start the fight against parasites in the fall. To do this, you need to properly dig up the site, lay out the copper wire and do not forget about the preparation of lime additives that will help protect the plantings in the spring.
As soon as the night temperature drops below 0 ° C, the slugs will begin to dig deeper into the soil, where they will spend the whole winter protected from frost. Therefore, after the onset of stable frosts (not only night, but also daytime), you can start digging the site.
You need to dig to a depth of 10-15 cm, where parasites usually hide.
Slugs that find themselves on the surface of the earth at sub-zero temperatures will quickly die. The main thing in the digging process is not to get carried away and not turn over layers of earth deeper than 15 cm. So you are unlikely to destroy more parasites, but you can easily disturb the structure of the soil, which will reduce its fertility.
If during the digging process you cannot remove all the slugs from the ground, use additional copper protection. This material is highly electrically conductive, so slugs who try to cross a copper obstacle will receive a small electric shock. It will not kill them, but it will stop them.
The simplest option for such protection is copper wire.
If you form the beds in advance, or at least indicate their location, simply stretch a copper wire along each of them. This can be done in the spring, but if you want to save time, spread the wire around the area immediately after the autumn digging. Instead of wire, copper bands can be used, which are suitable for protecting tree trunks and shrubs, as well as for fencing each plant separately.
Slugs are afraid of lime. This substance burns the delicate bodies of parasites, so the beds covered with a thin layer of lime additive will always be protected. You can use dolomite flour or hydrated lime, which will not only drive away slugs, but also saturate the soil with nutrients.Garden paths can be covered with a layer of fine crushed stone screening, which also contains lime. It is better to prepare all these funds in advance so that in spring they can be used immediately after planting vegetables.
Please note that any lime additives deoxidize the soil, therefore, before using them, it is necessary to determine the level of acid-base balance of the soil in your area.
If the acidity is too low, replace lime with river sand, ground pepper or mustard powder, which will also become an insurmountable obstacle to pests.
