Raspberries in the Moscow region: a brief overview of the best varieties

Raspberry is one of the most popular berry crops in the Moscow region. It can be found in almost every garden area. And this is not surprising. After all, both children and adults love delicious and very healthy raspberries. In addition, unlike many other fruit shrubs, it is unpretentious to growing conditions and does not require time-consuming maintenance.

The main criteria for choosing a raspberry variety for the Moscow region

The Moscow region belongs to the zone of risky farming. Most often, gardeners in this region are faced with such unfavorable factors for plant cultivation as:

  • long, rather frosty winter (air temperature during this period can drop to -25-30 ° C, and in some years up to 45 ° C);
  • return frosts in late spring, which can damage raspberry flowers;
  • heavy summer rains;
  • scarcity of soils in most of the region.

When choosing a raspberry variety for a site in the Moscow region, their ability to withstand these problems must be taken into account. Better than others, frost-resistant varieties grow and bear fruit here, which have time to mature in a relatively short summer and are resistant to major diseases and pests. The taste of berries and, of course, yield are also important for gardeners.

Raspberry varieties zoned for the Moscow region

The State Commission for Testing and Protection of Breeding Achievements recommends more than 40 varieties of raspberries for cultivation in the Moscow region. Among them, each gardener will be able to choose a culture that best suits all his requirements.

Early

Early and ultra-early varieties of raspberries are especially popular with residents of the Moscow region. Their berries ripen in the second half of June, when most of the fruit crops still do not bear fruit. These varieties include:

  • Hussar;
  • Bryansk;
  • Companion
  • Bryansk cascade;
  • Kuzmin's news;
  • An early surprise;
  • Sun;
  • Meteor;
  • Lazarevskaya.

Hussar

An early ripe raspberry variety for universal use. Its berries are used for fresh consumption and for making jams and compotes. In addition, they retain their taste well when frozen.

Gusar is characterized by a powerful spreading bush up to 2.7 m high. Biennial shoots are straight, prickly at the base. The berries are rather large, obtuse-conical. When ripe, they turn dark crimson. The taste of berries is pleasant, sweet and sour. Tasting score - 4.2 points.

Average weight of Gusar berries - 3.2 g

Ripe fruits of the Gusar variety contain:

  • 10.8% sugars;
  • 1.8% acids;
  • 27.2 mg /% ascorbic acid.

The average yield of the variety is 83.6 c / ha.

The Gusar variety is excellent. This summer I was tortured to harvest. I never bend down or cut the ends of the shoots before winter. In the spring, I just trim the shoots, they are very long, after the last winter, shoots about 2.5 m long overwintered. Overgrowing twigs are located almost along the entire shoot, from the ground about 0.5–0.6 m.

Kuzmin's news

An old Russian dessert variety, bred back in 1912. It tolerates low temperatures and other unfavorable weather conditions.

Bushes News Kuzmina tall and spreading. A young plant forms 15–20 shoots per meter, their number decreases in old age. Biennial stems are geniculate, strongly drooping. The number of spines is average. The berries are red, obtuse-conical or elongated. Their pulp is very tasty and aromatic. Tasting score - 5 points.

About 1.5 kg of berries are harvested from one bush Kuzmin's News

The Novost Kuzmina variety also has disadvantages. Among them:

  • low resistance to fungal and viral diseases;
  • frequent attack by raspberry gnats and spider mites;
  • poor transportability of fresh berries.

Raspberry News Kuzmina is a very old variety, it has been growing successfully on my site for many years, inherited from my grandmother, but I have not tried raspberries better. I planted a lot, but the berries are tasteless, then they crumble into grains, which is also unpleasant.
As a result, I exhausted everything, only this one grows. The variety was helped to determine by a friend, doctor of agricultural sciences from NIISISNP in Biryulyovo. She said such raspberries are extremely difficult to find.
The characteristic feature is the aroma of berries. It's a fairy tale!

Meteor

A very early raspberry variety, bred at the Kokinsky strong point as a result of crossing Novosti Kuzmin and Kostinobrodskaya. Differs in resistance to low temperatures and fungal diseases, but often suffers from spider mites, shoot gall midge, purple spot and mycoplasma overgrowth.

Meteor is a powerful, medium-sized bush with an average shoot-forming ability (20-25 shoots per meter). Biennial shoots are weakly spiny, with drooping tops. The berries are blunt-conical, red. Their average weight is 2.3–3 g. Dessert taste.

Gardeners of the Moscow Region highly appreciate the Meteor variety for a very early ripening period and excellent taste of berries.

From one hectare of plantings of the Meteor variety, 50–70 centners of berries are harvested, suitable for fresh consumption, canning and freezing.

I have a Meteor at the moment, the earliest of the raspberries begins to bear fruit. The taste is good ... but the berry is small. True, when the autumn is lingering and the bush begins to remont, for some reason the berry is almost 2 times larger than the main summer harvest. Growth gives the sea. In connection with early fruiting, all his shortcomings are forgiven him.

Late

Late raspberry varieties are poorly adapted for growing in the Moscow region. As a rule, their berries do not have time to ripen in the short summer of this region. Only mid-season and mid-late varieties are included in the State Register for the Moscow Region, for example:

  • Kirzhach;
  • Zorenka Altai;
  • Red rain;
  • Malakhovka;
  • Ruby of Bryansk;
  • Shy
  • Peresvet;
  • Ruby of Bryansk;
  • Samara is dense.

Kirzhach

A universal variety of raspberries with an average ripening period, obtained at the All-Russian Institute of Selection and Technology of Horticulture and Nursery by crossing Molling Promis and Carnival. It tolerates thaw well and is relatively resistant to raspberry and spider mites and anthracnose, but often suffers from raspberry beetle, root cancer and mycoplasma overgrowth. Kirzhach grows well and bears fruit on poor soils, typical for most of the Moscow region.

The bushes of this variety are powerful, with a high ability to form growth (more than 25 shoots per meter). Stems are colored green in the shade, bright red in the sun. A few purple thorns cover the entire length of the shoot.

The Kirzhach variety, bred more than 20 years ago, does not lose its popularity among gardeners of the Moscow region

Blunt-conical, crimson, with weak pubescence Kirzhach berries weigh 2.2–3 g. Uniform drupes are well adhered to the fruit. From one hectare of plantings of this variety, 67-100 centners of fruits with a good dessert taste are harvested, which is estimated by experts at 4.3 points.

Peresvet

Medium late winter hardy variety of universal use. It is rarely affected by purple spot, anthracnose and raspberry mite.

Tall but compact bushes of Peresvet form an average amount of undergrowth. Biennial shoots are brown, annual shoots are reddish, without waxy bloom. Hard, with a purple base, thorns are located along the entire length of the stems. The Peresvet variety is characterized by dark red berries with an average weight of 2.5–3 g. Their flesh is dense, sweet-sour, without aroma. Tasting score - 4.7 points. One hectare of Peresvet raspberry yields an average of 44.2 centners of fruit.

Berries of the Peresvet variety are used both for fresh consumption and for processing.

Samara dense

A mid-late variety bred at the Samara zonal experimental station by crossing Novosti Kuzmin and Kaliningradskaya. In the conditions of the Moscow region, even in severe winters, it practically does not freeze out. The incidence of overgrowth and purple spotting is medium.

Bushes of Samara dense, tall, but slightly spreading. The shoots of the first year are brown with a waxy coating, the second - geniculate, brown. The stems are covered with an average number of dark purple thorns along the entire length. The berries are rather large, conical, when ripe they acquire a raspberry color. Their average weight varies from 2.6 to 3.3 g. Inhomogeneous small drupes are well attached to each other. The pulp is dense, aromatic, with a pleasant dessert taste.

The yield of the variety is good. Fresh fruits perfectly tolerate transportation and storage.

Large-fruited

A real breakthrough in raspberry breeding was the discovery by the English scientist Derek Jennings of the L1 gene, which is responsible for the large size of berries. The varieties that have it bear fruits weighing up to 12, and in some cases up to 23 grams. In addition, this gene is the cause of the appearance of a large number of branches of fruit branches (laterals). In most large-fruited varieties, laterals have 4–5 branching orders, each of which can produce up to 45 berries. Due to this, the yield of such forms increases many times over. For comparison, fruit twigs Novosti Kuzmina have one or two branches, capable of forming no more than 14 berries.

Unfortunately, the large-fruited gene is not resistant. Over time, the loss of this varietal trait may occur, which is why the berries become noticeably smaller.

Most varieties of large-fruited raspberries require favorable climatic conditions and careful care. But some of them grow well and bear fruit in the Moscow region. Among them:

  • Hercules;
  • Beauty of Russia;
  • Arbat;
  • Patricia;
  • Atlant;
  • Abundant;
  • Tarusa

Hercules

Repaired raspberry variety. The harvest on the shoots of the first year of life in the conditions of the Moscow region begins to ripen in August. Fruiting continues until frost.

The bushes of Hercules are medium-sized, slightly spreading, with a low ability to form growth (no more than 3-4 shoots per bush). Purple, prickly stems do not need support. The fruiting zone takes up more than half of their length.

The Hercules variety is often used by large farms.

The berries of this variety are red, truncated-conical in shape, with homogeneous, well-linked drupes. Their average weight is about 6.8 g, and the maximum weight can reach 10 g. The pulp is dense, sweet and sour, with a pronounced aroma.

The average yield of Hercules is 2–2.5 kg per plant, or 93 c / ha. Its berries are well transported and suitable both for fresh consumption and for all types of processing. Among the advantages of the variety is its increased resistance to major diseases and pests of raspberries.

Raspberry Hercules - planted in the spring of the 14th year. Six bushes. This year it gave its first harvest. I liked it. The shoots are powerful, the berries are large and tasty. And there are quite a few of them. Not aggressive, as it gives a little overgrowth.

Patricia

One of the most popular varieties of large-fruited raspberries, bearing fruit on the shoots of the second year. He rarely suffers from the main diseases of raspberries and does not reduce yields even if there is an infection. The cold resistance of the variety is moderate, in the Moscow region it often needs to bend the shoots for the winter. Among its disadvantages is susceptibility to late blight.

Patricia is a medium-sized, semi-sprawling plant that annually produces 6–10 replacement shoots and 5–7 root suckers. Erect, thornless stems covered with a waxy coating of low to medium intensity.

Patricia berries are truncated-conical in shape, red. Their average weight ranges from 4 to 12 g. The pulp is of medium density, with a pleasant sweet taste and a bright raspberry aroma. The fruits of this variety retain their integrity well when removed from the bush and do not crumble when overripe.

With intensive cultivation, the yield of the Patricia variety reaches 10-12 tons per hectare

In the conditions of the Moscow region, the fruiting of Patricia usually lasts from July 5-7 to August 1. The average yield of the variety is about 25 kg per one hundred square meters or 4–5 kg per bush. Under favorable weather conditions and high soil fertility, this indicator can almost double.

Patricia liked it, tasty and problem-free in my opinion ... The harvest is good ...

Tarusa

The first grade of Russian selection with thickened. hard shoots of the standard type. It practically does not need support and does not form a large amount of root growth spreading over the site. The height of the bushes of this variety does not exceed 1.8 m.

Because of its thick and tough shoots, the Tarusa variety is often called raspberry trees.

Ripe Tarusa berries are bright red and have a pleasant sweet taste with a characteristic raspberry aroma. Their weight varies from 4 to 12 g. The fruits are perfectly separated from the fruit-bearing without crumbling into separate drupes. Thanks to their juicy pulp and small size of seeds, they are suitable for all types of processing. In addition, Tarusa berries tolerate transportation and storage well.

In the Moscow region, Tarusa begins to ripen at the end of the first decade of July. Fruiting ends not earlier than the beginning of August. During this time, up to 20 tons of berries are harvested from one hectare of plantings of this variety.

Shoots of this variety do not freeze when the air temperature drops to -30 ° C. If more severe frosts are expected, then it is better to bend them to the ground. Tarusa is quite resistant to all fungal diseases of raspberries, and, according to the author of the variety V.V. Kichiny does not require mandatory prophylactic chemical treatments. She is also immune to such a dangerous pest as aphids.

I have Tarusa for over 10 years. She planted 3 bushes and at first she did not give growth. Now it crawls like an ordinary raspberry. Planted on a wind turbine. There is no other place, we have a corner section and the winds from two streets are like in the Jericho pipe. Sun from morning until 17 o'clock, then the shadow from the forest. I am not bending down, standing as soldiers. The tops are rarely frozen over. Growth from me, 150-160 cm. The earth was just poked. two or three years ago I began to monitor the land and feed so that the berries were large. The harvest is good. The ripe berry is sweet. I am very happy with it!
In the summer you have to tie up. Heavy bushes are falling down with rains and wind. But I stick in the armature and tie the falling bushes to it. For some reason, not everyone bows.

Yellow-fruited

Yellow raspberries are quite rare in the Moscow region. Many gardeners refuse to grow it due to poor transportability and unsuitability for processing, while forgetting about the advantages of sunny berries. They are excellent for dietary nutrition due to their low acidity and low content of anthocyanins, which often cause allergies..

Black-fruited

Black raspberries came to the Moscow region relatively recently. To date, not a single variety of this crop has been entered into the State Register for the region. But the gardeners of the region successfully grow it on their plots. They highly value black raspberries for their unpretentiousness and pleasant taste of aromatic berries. In addition, it does not give root growth, which greatly simplifies planting care. Black-fruited forms differ and ease of reproduction. To get a new plant, it is enough to dig in the top of the shoot and wait for the roots to appear, after which the young bush is separated and transplanted to any suitable place.

Since each variety of raspberries has certain requirements for observing the temperature regime, climatic conditions, as well as soil characteristics, it is better to choose universal varieties that perform well in any conditions. Today there are the best varieties of raspberries, which are popular among most gardeners in the country.

The most popular and, perhaps, resistant varieties of berries include:

"Hercules". These berries are large-fruited varieties of raspberries, and are distinguished by excellent indicators of resistance to frost and various diseases. The berries of this raspberry variety are very large in size and weight, which is about 12 grams. Taste qualities are also not inferior to external characteristics and are distinguished by their pleasant sweet and sour aftertaste.

But as mentioned above, not all raspberry varieties are accepted in certain areas. Therefore, before buying a particular bush, you should ask whether it will grow in a particular region.

Varieties of large-fruited and fruitful raspberries

Suitable for the Moscow region: Bogatyr, Moscow Giant, Gusar, Yellow Giant. Large-fruited and high-yielding raspberries are in dire need of feeding, since during the fruiting period the plant spends a lot of nutrients, depleting the soil - in the fall it is necessary to apply nitrogen fertilizers so that there are no problems with the growth of lateral shoots. To ensure sufficient area to feed each plant, the seedlings should be planted 70 cm apart, the distance between the rows is 2 m. Raspberries, which give a bountiful harvest, need to be tied to trellises.

  • Bogatyr - high-yielding, remontant, standard plant with sewnless shoots. Ripening period is medium early. The berries can weigh up to 20 g. They have an elongated shape. The yield varies between 5-12 kg, depending on growing conditions.
  • Moscow giant - a semi-renovated variety, productive (10-12 kg). Raspberries are conical in shape, bright red, very large (up to 22-25 g). The height of the shoots is 2 m.
  • Hussar - a powerful plant up to 3 m high. The average weight of berries is 10-12 g. Productivity is about 6 kg. The bush can withstand drought, frost, and has resistance to fungal diseases.
  • Yellow giant has an early ripening period. Fruits are large (up to 10 g), yellow in color. Each bush brings up to 9 kg. Dessert taste. Powerful shoots, numerous thorns.

  • Top 10 popular varieties of raspberries in the Moscow region 2016

    Review of raspberry varieties based on demand in 2016, top 10 most requested raspberry varieties in the Moscow region:

    1. Tarusa
      Or a raspberry tree - this is the name of this variety because of its erect, with a powerful thornless stem, shoot up to 1.5 m in height.

    The variety is non-repairable, with an average ripening period, and has a high yield. The berries are large, transportability is good. The main application is processing.

    The Tarusa variety requires support during the ripening period. In winter, the tops of the shoots can freeze up - in the spring it is necessary to cut them off.

    It is recommended to plant plants only in the most windless, sunny place.

    When fresh, the taste of berries grown in the Moscow region is poor in sweetness, but not sour either.

    The popularity of this variety seems more exaggerated than justified by the quality of the berries in the conditions of cultivation in the Moscow region.

    Hercules
    The most popular remontant variety in the suburbs of Kazakov's selection. The name itself characterizes this variety, which gives large berries weighing up to 10g sweet and sour taste with a delicate aroma. The transportability of the berries is good. Purpose - processing.

    Ripens by mid-August (earlier than many other remontant varieties) and bears fruit before frost. For the winter, shoots must be cut off completely to obtain a good harvest. Shoot-forming ability is low, shoots are prickly. The bush is slightly spreading, does not grow much, 1.5-2 meters in height. Shoots can bend a lot under the load of the crop, so it is better to use a trellis.

    The variety is resistant to pests and diseases. It tolerates winters near Moscow.

    Hussar

    Like Hercules, a variety of Kazakov's selection, non-repairable, very popular in the Moscow region. The berries are medium and large, tasty and aromatic.

    The bush is powerful, vigorous, grows up to 1.5 - 2 meters and more, with strong, slightly thorny shoots, requires a garter during the fruiting period. Forms little overgrowth. In spring, you can prune to a height of 1-1.5 m. It tolerates both drought and frost well. Resistant to pests and diseases. Unpretentious, but responsive to watering and feeding.

    Yellow giant

    The most popular variety with yellow fruits. The berries are large, weighing 4 - 8 g, blunt-conical in shape, light yellow in color, excellent taste, very sweet and aromatic - perhaps the most valuable quality of this variety. The transportability of berries is typical for yellow raspberries - low. Productivity is high, 3-5 kg can be harvested from one bush.

    The variety is not repaired, which is important for those who end the summer season early and do not have time to see the harvest of remontant raspberries. Medium early ripening - the first half of July. Ripe berries crumble.

    Slightly spreading bush, shoots up to 1.5 meters high, covered with small numerous thorns. The overgrowth forms quite a lot, which must be taken into account when planting.

    Average winter hardiness, shoots can freeze slightly, are sensitive to temperature changes, so it is better to cover for the winter. The variety is resistant to diseases and pests.

    Bryansk miracle

    Variety selected by Kazakov. The berries are large, weighing 5 - 6 g, beautiful elongated shape, sweet and sour taste, the degree of acidity depends on the growing conditions. The yield is high, 2.5 - 3 kg per bush. Transportability is good, you can collect in the country and eat fresh at home.

    The grade is remontant. The beginning of ripening on the shoots of the first year is mid-August, fruiting continues until frost. The bush is sprawling, which must be taken into account when planning the landing site, 1.5-1.8 meters high, weakly spiny shoots.

    Not resistant to fungal diseases in wet weather.

    Pride of Russia or Giant

    A very productive variety of the Kichina selection. Productivity 5 - 8 kg per bush. The berries are very large, weighing 10 - 12 g, tasty, transportable, suitable both for fresh consumption and for processing.

    Non-repairable variety, medium-early ripening period. The bush is erect, with thornless shoots 1.5 - 1.8 m tall. Resistant to fungal diseases and aphids. Average winter hardiness, shoots freeze under severe frosts (-30 0 C), so in the Moscow region it is better to cover the bushes with at least snow.

    Orange miracle

    Repaired yellow raspberry with tasty, aromatic berries, which almost all have time to ripen before frost in the suburbs. Ripening begins in mid-August.

    The berries are large, beautiful, dessert taste, with a pleasant sourness, but not very transportable - ideal for fresh consumption and processing.

    These are black raspberries - not blackberries. The berries are sweet, black. Cumberland will be a good addition to the raspberry palette anywhere and on the table. Berries of the Cumberland variety are consumed both fresh, they are added when processing raspberries of other varieties, they are good in freezing.

    A vigorous bush, up to 3 meters in height, requires a garter on a trellis, since the shoots are strongly bent to the ground and can take root - the bush will "run". At the same time, Cumberland raspberries do not sprout. The berries are small, but many, ripen in clusters - the yield is high, up to 8 kg can be harvested from the bush. Non-repairing variety, ripening occurs on the shoots of the last year. The bush winters well. Cumberland is gaining strength in the third year. Unpretentious, tolerates partial shade, frost-hardy.

    It is helpful to remember that Cumberland's shoots are very thorny.

    Variety of selection and Kichina. Non-refurbished. Berries are elongated, large, weighing 4-12 g, tasty, sweet. From one bush, you can collect up to 4 - 5 kg of berries. They begin to ripen from mid-June.

    Bushes without thorns, up to 2 meters high. Good frost resistance, but in the Moscow region it is better to cover.

    The Patricia variety gives a lot of growth that needs to be removed in order to keep the bush within the desired framework.

    Vigorous, remontant variety.

    Erect bushes 1.5 - 1.8 m high. Yielding, there are a lot of berries on the bush, they are large, weighing 5 - 6 g, beautifully shaped with uniform drupes. You can get 2-3 kg from one bush. High transportability.

    Berries are consumed both fresh and used for processing and freezing.

    The Atlant variety is resistant to diseases, winter-hardy.

    The best large-fruited varieties for different regions

    When choosing a variety, it is important to take into account the growing region - one raspberry feels great in any area, the other bears fruit only under warm and sunny weather.
