Choosing the best varieties of onion sets

Planting a seed in the ground, growing and harvesting in your garden is the most enjoyable activity. One observation of the growth process is worth it. In order for all the seedlings to sprout, they need to be looked after, but it is important to choose the right seeds. Onion is one of the first to fall into the ground in spring. There are many types of this vegetable, and below are the best varieties of onion sets.

A fairly strong variety in terms of resistance to viruses and various diseases, which cannot be said about frost resistance. The vegetable ripens early and quickly enough: you can plant it in May, and collect a stable crop after 70 days. Therefore, it is considered an early ripening variety. External characteristics:

  • round form
  • golden crust in five layers
  • weight up to 120 g
  • leaf height - up to 30 cm.
  • the size of the set is small, because of which it can quickly freeze out.

It has a pungent taste, ideal for canning and raw consumption. It is necessary to plant at intervals of 10 cm in rows, the distance between which is not more than 30 cm, as for all other varieties of onion sets.

This variety ripens after about three months and is therefore called mid-season. Alvina gives a very good harvest. They are planted in the ground in the month of May to a depth of 4 cm. External distinctive features:

  • ellipse shape
  • weight 70 - 150 g
  • purple husk
  • inside the bulb is white with a purple color.

The vegetable is not very spicy to taste, so it is preferable to eat it raw. Differs in good juiciness. The shelf life of this onion is 6-7 months.

This variety should be planted in soil rich in nutrients. Sufficiently resistant to frost, but do not start planting in the ground at -12 ° C. Before planting, it is good to warm up the sevok or the ground. Suitable for planting in winter, three weeks before frost. Appearance:

  • oblong rounded shape
  • weight - 80 g
  • sowing size - up to 4 cm, crop size - up to 8 to 11 cm
  • color - a dark shade of gold.

The inside is very juicy. To its taste, it is classified as a sweet variety, but there is a very light peppercorn. Convenient for slicing, easy to clean. Ideal both for raw consumption and for frying or preservation. Stored at home for a long time, does not deteriorate.

It is a light yellow hybrid from a Dutch breeding, it has the most rounded shape among other varieties. In dry conditions, it is stored longer than other types. Taste characteristics are gentle and slightly pungent, which gives another advantage to this variety. The bulb forms very strong and deep roots. This will prevent drought from killing the plant.... Refers to varieties with high yields and resistance to viruses.

Planting can be done in the fall, when there is still no frost. The optimal temperature regime is +10 ° С. It is better not to overfill the seedling with water. After all, if you exceed the moisture rate, then the vegetable will not be stored for a long time and will quickly rot.

This mid-season species was bred in Russia. Included in the list of relatively new varieties of onion sets. Previously, they were only presented as seeds. Very long and well stored in winter. It has a rounded, even shape and brown color, sometimes a light shade. The weight is quite large - up to 200 g. It is recommended to plant shallowly into light and fertilized soils. This can be done in April and early May, and by the end of July, harvest up to 5 kg per square meter.

This is one of the Dutch varieties of onion sets that have recently been imported into our country. However, he is very popular. One of its advantages is its ripening rate, which ranges from 75 to 85 days. It normally tolerates storage for the whole winter. From a square meter, you get, at best, up to 2.5 kg of harvest. The bulb weighs up to 80 g on average, but with proper planting, good soil and in favorable conditions, it is possible to get a bulb weighing up to 120 g. Carmen onion sets have a bright red color and ellipsoidal shape. Inside, the color is even more saturated, dark purple. Excellent taste:

  • juicy
  • sweetish
  • weakly sharp
  • has a pleasant aroma.

Therefore, it is added to fresh salads. This vegetable is useful for people with low cholesterol levels for regular consumption.

Onion sets "Corrado" are very popular, the description of the variety of which can be reduced to several important advantages:

  • stored for a whole year, until the next harvest
  • early variety - ripens from 73 to 93 days
  • gives a stable large yield.

Long-term storage is achieved thanks to the very dense double husk. It is important to store in a room with good air circulation at a temperature not lower than 15 ° C. The color is golden with brown, the bulb weighs up to 130 g, and the taste is semi-sharp.

This is a fairly early variety of onion sets, tolerates cold spring well. So, already at the end of May you will be able to collect vegetables. It is necessary to constantly water and loosen the ground. Good maintenance and mineral-rich soil will yield up to 3 kg per square meter.

A true keeper of vitamin C, Red Baron has made a name for himself in the kitchen, especially in salads. Chefs prefer this variety for its semi-sharp taste and shelf life. It is dark red in color, round in shape, moderately juicy and dense inside.

Onion sets "Red Baron", the description of the variety of which speaks of its high yield, practicality and usefulness, can be planted in a mid-latitude garden.

This onion variety is early and yields a good harvest three months after planting, for which it is highly prized. Stably gives up to 3 kg per square meter. It is planted in the spring when the temperature is set at least 10 ° C. During this period, the soil is sufficiently moist, which is what Rosanna demands. Autumn planting is possible three weeks before the onset of frost. The vegetable is medium-sharp to taste, white, dense and juicy on the inside. Outside, onions are covered with pink husks.

Rosanna is on the list of popular onion sets due to its size. The round onion is quite large, with an average diameter of 8 cm.The mass ranges from 120 g.

Quite large, rounded bulbs weighing from 100 to 120 g have a brown husk that covers the white juicy inside of the pungent taste. The planting is done in May in fertilized soil and they expect the month of July, when it will be possible to harvest - up to 5 kg from one square meter of land. Saplings tolerate adverse weather conditions very well. These qualities are very impressive, thanks to which the Rumba bow has gained great popularity.

Onion “Stardust” is very popular among the people, the ripening period of which is on average 60 days. This is the only white variety on this list that is planted in the first week of May. This variety can bring you more than 5 kg of snow-white bulbs per square meter.

The shape is round and even. Light weight, up to 60 g. The onion tastes a little spicy, which is appreciated fresh in the kitchen. Stored 6 months after harvest at a constant warm temperature. If the condition is not met, arrows are likely to appear.

The Sturon onion set is a variant of the Stuttgarter Riesen, but with better qualities. Their bulbs are different. "Sturon" has a round, almost perfect shape. The husk is brown, like its predecessor. Ideal for growing in regions where it is cold most of the year. It is not prone to decay and can be stored well. Its peculiarity is that it ripens earlier than "Stuttgarter Riesen" by about 12 days and brings a bountiful harvest.

This is a representative of ordinary onions in brown hulls. But it tastes less pungent a little gentle... It is distinguished by its picky care and long shelf life, without losing its taste. Its yield is not inferior to other varieties and gives 5 kg per square meter. Thanks to these qualities, "Chalcedony" will never leave general consumption, because it is difficult to imagine winter without an ordinary onion.

Outwardly it differs from others, because it has an egg-shaped shape. The husk is light yellow. It tastes very spicy. Its main feature is productivity. "Centurion", along with "Hercules", is able to bring 8 kg of onions per square meter.

According to its characteristics, among gardeners, this variety is considered very high quality and reliable. A good harvest can be harvested three months after planting. Store the product in a cool place with good air circulation.

Seed or Seed Onions - Which Is Better?

Equally well, you can provide yourself with onion stocks and growing through seeds, and growing from seedlings. But it is more economically profitable - through seedlings from seeds, the so-called nigella. Compare photo # 6, where the onions are grown from sets, and photo # 10. Almost the same size of onions.

According to the experience of sibms, the Stuttgarter Riesen variety, when grown through seedlings, definitely gives a good, full-fledged bulb. Moreover, if the goal is to grow marketable bulbs from seeds, then it is necessary to sow early, and if the goal is to get sevok next year, then you can sow in open ground in early to mid-May.

Useful tips for growing family onions

  • The family is not afraid of cold weather, he is not even afraid of return frosts, which are so characteristic of the northern regions even in the month of May. Therefore, do not hesitate to plant it on the ridges, and this will allow you to get good large bulbs.
  • For planting, medium-sized onions are always selected. The optimum size in diameter is 3-3.5 cm. They give good yields and are not susceptible to disease. But small seed material is great for planting on greens. Usually, a special bed is allocated for this, bulbs less than 2 cm in diameter are planted on it in the grooves, and then during the season they cut off the feather or pull out the greens directly with young white onions.
  • The family onion grows remarkably on the windows in the apartment, so it is often used to get greenery. It is advisable to plant the bulbs of large family onions on the feather, then the greens will be lush and juicy. Planting time is from about mid-January, as the bulbs must survive a fairly long dormant period.
  • It is necessary to remove and dry the onions on time. Otherwise, it will be difficult to preserve, and the seed material for the next year will be of poor quality.

As you can see, growing and caring for family onions is not particularly difficult, and a detailed description of all stages will allow you to achieve excellent results. And perhaps, having learned how to grow a family onion, for someone the family will become one of the favorite garden crops on the site.
