Indoor plants in your kitchen

The kitchen, without a doubt, is exactly the room that creates a special, unique atmosphere for every home. And if earlier this place was intended exclusively for cooking and was even located in the background of the house so that the heat and smells did not reach the living rooms, now the situation has completely changed. Nowadays, all family members gather here to communicate, discuss the most important matters and problems, share their joys and sorrows with each other, or just relax.

"Summer kitchen

Despite the presence of hoods and ventilation, the climate in this room is usually quite hot, which evokes associations with the warmest season - summer. Therefore, it seems to us that the concept of interior decoration of this room in a "natural" style is quite successful. Suffice it to recall how tasty and fragrant food is in nature - at picnics, in the country, when the air around is filled with the aromas of flowering herbs, and the warm rays of the sun warm and cause a feeling of pleasant comfort ...

Unfortunately, given the current rhythm of city life, it is rarely possible to give yourself such pleasure. But no one can prevent us from decorating the kitchen in our own apartment, for example, in the "country" style, and placing beautiful plants on window sills and stands that have an exceptional ability to absorb carbon dioxide, purifying the air and giving it natural natural freshness ...

It can be said without exaggeration that the use of ornamental plants helps us maintain contact with wildlife. In this regard, the combination of fresh foliage and natural wood is simply wonderful. Emotionally, it is difficult to overestimate the ability of this natural material to "warm" and revitalize our home. Wooden surfaces must be covered with moisture-resistant varnish. Weaving from dense fabric and even burlap looks very original and stylish in the decoration of the "summer" kitchen. It can be used not only for upholstering furniture, but also for wall panels that are now in fashion. With good lighting, ivy can be put on such walls. Any, even the most ordinary plants will look very attractive if planted in clay jugs. Wicker products are also surprisingly natural in such an interior, be it serving tables, breadbaskets, salt shakers and fruit baskets. They are hand-woven from natural environmentally friendly fibers, strong, comfortable and durable. Ivy or Tradescantia can be placed in pots made of such materials. So, let's get down to phytodesign ...

Where to start greening your kitchen?

First of all, it is necessary to choose exactly those plants for which the hot kitchen climate is most suitable, or, at least, will not harm, due to the fact that they are quite unpretentious.

For landscaping the room in which the gas stove is located, it is best to choose plants with fast-growing foliage, since the combustion products of gas in the air negatively affect the condition and appearance of the leaves, therefore one of the possible ways out of this situation is regular pruning and removal spoiled greenery.

Another solution is to grow plants in the kitchen with wide glossy leaves that are easy and convenient to wash. As a rule, washing or wiping once a week is sufficient to preserve the decorative effect of such crops. It is also very important to consider the light needs of each plant in order to decide where it is best to place it.

Based on the optimal lighting conditions, all plants are divided into four groups:

1. Light-loving. These include: azalea, aloe, wilted bilbergia, grapefruit, date, fuchsia and others. These plants thrive on southern and eastern window sills.

2. Plants that are better suited for ambient light: begonias, ferns, tradescantia, philodendrons and others. This group includes plants that cannot withstand bright sunlight and can only grow well in diffused light.

3. Shade tolerant: ferns, dense-flowered and bristle asparagus, variegated scindapsus, zebrin and flumines tradescantia, Benjamin ficus, elastic and arrow-shaped, climbing philodendron, conifers. Plants of this group grow well in the depths of rooms and do not require additional lighting even in winter.

4. Indifferent to the conditions of the light regime: hydrangea, hibiscus, common ivy, variegated scindapsus, thuja, elastic ficus, crested chlorophytum, hoya. These plants grow both in lighted areas and in shade, and therefore are very convenient for decorating living quarters.

I would like to remind once again that all of the above applies only to adult plants, since young rooted shoots and cuttings need a special light regime. In addition, flowers should be positioned so as not to interfere with food preparation and other work. In this regard, by far the most suitable place for setting flower pots is the windowsill.

Large tub crops are unlikely to be suitable for decorating the kitchen, since they will only block the passage. You also need to remember that indoor plants do not tolerate drafts, and even more so, you should not place them in the immediate vicinity of stoves, especially gas ones. After all, only well-groomed, healthy and full of life flowers can truly decorate your home.

We create our own interior!

For many people, a cozy kitchen is the main symbol of family well-being. In addition, some housewives have to spend a huge amount of their time here, and it is especially important for them that the decor and design of this room match their taste and create a positive emotional mood. In addition, creating an interior is a wonderful way of self-realization, which is so necessary for all of us. It's so nice when the home environment pleases both us and our guests! In this respect, floristry opens up great opportunities for us.

There are different design techniques for decorating an interior with living plants. They differ both in the types and texture of the flowers themselves, and in style ("country", classicism, avant-garde, "fusion", etc.) But whatever style you choose, the main thing is the correspondence of all its elements to your inner feeling beauty. Nothing should limit your imagination, especially since flowers are essentially living beings that have powerful positive energy and are able to share it with their owners and give them a good mood and well-being.

Feng Shui and Floriculture

A new science that studies the effect of the surrounding space on a person claims that the color of plants not only affects our mood, but can also help in curing various ailments. The color scheme of the interior plays a very important role in the mood and state of a person. For example, yellow carries a cheerfulness and is able to cure even prolonged depression. Blue calms and promotes mutual understanding among people. Purple violets can also help people with throat and thyroid problems. White is rightfully considered a symbol of purity and freshness. White violets have a beneficial effect on the nervous system and are able to relieve the negative effects of stress and suffering on the psyche of adults and especially children. And finally, red is the color of strength and energy that evokes a feeling of self-confidence and forms an active life position. It remains only to choose what you want - and make your dreams come true.

The choice is yours...

We just have to tell you which plants will feel best in your kitchen and how to properly care for them. Perhaps it is difficult to imagine crops that are more appropriate and necessary in this room than all kinds of seasonings: green onions, dill, parsley, basil or miniature vegetables in the form of indoor tomatoes or peppers. With good lighting, chlorophytum can be planted. Plants such as heat-loving violets, beautiful hoya, Kalanchoe of various varieties blooming all year round, and even regal azaleas grow well in the kitchen. The golden scindapsus is often picky. And one of the most unpretentious indoor plants - Tradescantia - can survive even near the stove. Let us now tell you in more detail about these wonderful creatures.

Scindapsus - a liana with aerial roots, a common and non-capricious houseplant. One of the reasons for its popularity is that it is able to absorb not only carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, but also nicotine and especially toxic substances emitted from some furniture: phenol and formaldehyde. The homeland of the scindapsus is the humid tropics. Therefore, it should not be supercooled, the illumination is best for it, good, but without direct sunlight. The plant is moisture-loving, it must be watered abundantly (except in winter, when moderate watering is recommended). All kinds of "water procedures" are very useful for him: spraying, washing the leaves with cool water. But it must be remembered that you can water the scindapsus only when the top layer of soil in the pot has time to dry out a little. Propagated by cuttings, which must be placed in water until the process takes root. If you want to achieve increased branching, the ends of the stem can be pinched.

The next plant - the orderly - is, of course, kalanchoe... It can significantly reduce the number of harmful microbes in the air and has antiviral activity. Kalanchoe does not tolerate the combination of high air humidity and low temperature, but it is also not recommended to overheat it, especially in winter, as this can lead to loss of leaves. This is a light-loving plant. Viviparous varieties reproduce by forming "babies" along the edge of the leaf. One of the necessary measures for caring for him is to shorten the stem as it grows and stretches.

Asparagus is an elegant plant of the lily family. In it, first of all, its high decorativeness is appreciated; twigs of some species are traditionally added to bouquets. Sprenger's asparagus is usually cultivated indoors. In general, there are a huge number of asparagus varieties, and not all of them are suitable for home cultivation. This plant will look especially beautiful in a wicker hanging basket. Moderate watering is recommended, care consists in regular feeding and pruning of yellowed branches.

Plant varieties suitable for the kitchen

When choosing plants for the kitchen, it makes no sense to spend money on expensive exotic specimens that require special care. The kitchen is not the place where they will feel good and please you with their appearance. It is recommended to select crops that have thick shiny leaves from which you can easily remove dust and dirt. These are: ficus, chlorophytum, aloe, scindapsus, crassula, anthurium and others.

The main feature of the plants that you want to place in the kitchen is their resistance to stress and the ability to grow in unfavorable climatic conditions. All plants can be divided into several types:

  • flowering plants. They will look very beautiful on your window. Such plants include: begonia, azalea, violets, cyclamen, geranium, decorative Kalanchoe and primroses
  • plants with original leaves ... These crops will decorate your interior with their decorative patterned leaves. These are such plants as: cheflera, dracaena or craton, which, moreover, are highly resistant to violations of growing rules and look great anywhere in your kitchen.
  • fruit trees ... These flowers will not only decorate your kitchen, but can also be beneficial. These are decorative peppers, coffee trees or citrus trees that can be placed on a table or shelves. They have a special decorative effect during the ripening of fruits and flowering.
  • moisture resistant ... Such plants thrive near hot spots of evaporation and splashing water. These crops include: balsam, amaranth and calathea. However, this does not mean that pots with these crops can be placed near the sink itself, since the detergent is bad for all plants.
  • unpretentious ... Such cultures do not need special care, and are loyal to the drafts that very often happen in the kitchen. In such conditions, they will feel good: begonia, chlorophytum, zebrina, hypoestes, scindapsus
  • floor plants ... If the size of your kitchen allows you to place floor plants, you can use them to create a beautiful green oasis and refresh the room. These plants include: ficus, monstera, hibiscus, yucca
  • succulents ... Succulents are crops that can be grown under infrequent watering conditions, but require a fair amount of light. These are such crops as: cacti, crassula, agave, aloe and spathiphyllum. Succulents can be combined in several different types in one pot, creating a unique arrangement that can be used to decorate a prominent place in your kitchen
  • ampel cultures ... They are distinguished by the presence of hanging shoots, with which you can decorate hanging cabinets, refrigerators or walls. However, it should be borne in mind that the air temperature is higher under the ceiling, and its humidity is lower. Therefore, in order for the plant to feel better in such conditions, they will need to be sprayed daily and watered regularly. These crops include: chlorophytum, scindapsus, tradescantia, ivy and passionflower
  • mini kitchen garden. When creating such a vegetable garden, you will receive not only a beautiful green composition, but also many useful crops that can be used in cooking. In addition, some leaves give off a pleasant aroma that makes you feel hungry and improves appetite. Such plants include: basil, watercress, parsley, dill, thyme, and other green herbs. Pots with such plants are advised to be placed on the windowsill or on special hanging shelves next to the window. Cultures planted with old clay cups or teapots will look beautiful.

Useful properties of indoor plants

Competent selection of indoor plants improves the microclimate in the house and the well-being of all its inhabitants. If you are still wondering whether to buy your first flower pot, here are some pros.

Humidifier... During the heating season, the moisture level in the house drops to 20-30 percent, although 60 percent is considered the norm. The consequences of low humidity include dryness of the mucous membranes of the nose and throat, peeling of the skin, the development of allergies, and respiratory diseases. Dry air is bad for wood furniture and parquet flooring. Growing indoor plants is one way to increase indoor humidity.

Plants that actively release moisture:

  • Anthurium
  • Aglaonema
  • Dieffenbachia
  • Maranta
  • Monstera
  • Nephrolepis
  • Philodendron
  • Hedera (Hedera algeriensis)
  • Ehmea (Aechmea).

It should be noted that to increase the air humidity to normal, you will need several plants - at least 10.

Air filter... Herbal filter plants absorb harmful volatiles and electromagnetic waves. The most unpretentious of these plants is Chlorophytum, which traps harmful substances contained in furniture, plastic, and tobacco smoke. Plants belonging to the genera Sansevieria, Tradescantia, Pelargonium, Begonia, Kalanchoë and Peperomia reduce the amount of dust and microorganisms. They are believed to be the best indoor plants for air purification.

Home doctor... Plants secrete biologically active substances (phytoncides) that suppress the growth and development of harmful microorganisms. They improve mood, increase efficiency, help to relax and sleep. Saintpaulia (Saintpaulia), myrtle (Mrtus) and conifers are known for their soothing properties. Keep these in mind when looking for the best indoor plants for your bedroom.

Kitchen garden on the windowsill... The cultivation of garden plants allows you to literally enjoy the fruits of your labor. Set up a mini-vegetable garden on the windowsill in the kitchen and fresh herbs will always be at hand.

How to choose

We do not recommend choosing expensive exotic flowers for your kitchen. Such copies are most often very demanding to comply with all parameters of their content. The slightest change in temperature, draft or poor lighting - a bright, beautiful flower will wither and may die.

Alternatively, expensive tropical plants can be placed in the combined kitchen of the dining room, placing them exactly in the recreation area or dining room, away from the work surfaces.

The video shows how to choose the necessary flowers:

That is why we advise you to choose unpretentious options for indoor plants, which are suitable for the kitchen.

Blooming

The most frequent guests in the kitchen: begonia, geranium, primrose. These are beautiful flowers, the flowering period of which is quite long, but at the same time they are unpretentious and easy to care for. Perhaps this is the best option for the kitchen.

Well suited for the kitchen cyclamen, azalea, violet, kalanchoe. Balsam tolerates high humidity well. A large kitchen can accommodate a Chinese rose.

Feng Shui teaching recommends putting a pot of geraniums in the kitchen - it copes well with negative energy and fatigue.

With original leaves

Ornamental plants such as croton with colorful leaves, cheflera look good. The beauty dracaena withstands high temperatures.
If the dracaena is not transplanted into a spacious pot, it will not grow too large. And which countertop for the kitchen is better to choose, you can find out by the link.

It is good to plant bamboo in the kitchen. It will be especially interesting to look like a living wall between the cooking area and the dining room or kitchen and living room.
In the sink area, you can arrange pots with arrowroot or calathea - they are not afraid if a few drops fall on the leaves.

Sansevieria is a plant that is almost impossible to "kill" with poor care. Without watering "Mother-in-law's language", as it is popularly called, can stand for several months.

Fruit

Small plants that not only bloom, but also bear fruit are appropriate in the kitchen like nowhere else. It is a decorative pepper, a miniature coffee tree. The large kitchen can accommodate a lemon or orange tree.

Many housewives grow decorative tomatoes or cucumbers on kitchen windowsills.

You can find out about design ideas for the kitchen here.

Unpretentious

Drafts in the kitchen are common, but not all houseplants can handle them. Begonia, zebrina, hypoestes, scindapsus are not afraid of drafts and you can safely decorate the kitchen with them.

Chlorophytum is an unpretentious and one of the most hardy indoor plants. This pretty plant, which looks like overgrown grass, is not drought (if you suddenly forget to water), neither poor lighting, nor temperature drops.

The video shows various unpretentious home flowers:

Succulents

If your kitchen is sunny and warm you can place succulent plants. These are all kinds of cacti, agave, aloe, spathiphyllum, crassula.Such plants can be grown not only in the flowerpots we are used to, but also create an interesting composition in an aquarium or in small transparent vessels. For greater decorativeness, you can consider the option of painting on glass with stained glass paints.

Some succulent lovers even manage to grow whole pictures from cacti, spathiphyllums or agaves.

Floor standing

Suitable for large, spacious kitchens. These are primarily miniature trees and palms: yucca, dracaena, orange, lemon, Chinese tree. Ficus is a frequent guest in the house. And, of course, the beautiful monstera or dieffenbachia, which will delight you with beautiful and unusual leaves.

If space allows, you can create a small corner - a winter garden, which will be a beautiful addition to the interior.

You can learn about setting the festive table at home here.

Ampelny

These are all possible climbing plants. The most frequent guests at the forges are Tradescantia, chlorophytum, passionflower, ivy, varieties of lianas, etc. It is worth noting that ampelous plants are mostly unpretentious, but you should not place them near the cooking zone - fatty fumes, settling on the leaves, can very quickly destroy the plant.

It is worth knowing that if leaves begin to dry in the kitchen of your Tradescantia or ivy with normal watering, this may be a sign of increased danger. So plants signal that the level of harmful radiation from appliances and furniture is off scale and becomes dangerous for humans.

Kitchen garden

Many housewives grow herbs, spices, lettuce and other greens instead of houseplants. Having thus planted a garden on the windowsill in the form of green onions, parsley or basil, you can not only decorate the kitchen, but also provide yourself with herbs for the whole year.

How to choose plants for the kitchen

How to choose plants for the kitchen
