Are ligus berries poisonous?

We have a dense dense privet hedge facing the street. We have small children, should we take down the hedge?

Response: Well, it's true that berries on privets are poisonous. However, I do not think you need to worry. In Sweden, no serious cases of poisoning have been reported from privets, and no deaths.

You can get symptoms such as feeling sick, vomiting and possibly you can get cramps if you eat a lot of berries. But children need to like them to ingest the considerable amount required, and they are not very appetizing. In addition, privet hedges are usually trimmed a few times per season, and this usually means that there are not so many berries.

Leave the hedge alone. The youngest children are still kept a watchful eye, as they put everything in their mouths, and then it is possible to teach children which berries to eat and which not. They are good at seeing the difference. And it is better to keep the hedge as protection against traffic, which is a greater threat to children.

Ferns have been trampled by dinosaurs and preserved their unique appearance for hundreds of millions of years. Some are poisonous, others edible. Ferns can be the most delicious primer you have ever tasted.

In the spring there is much to look forward to. Step by step, nature unfolds before the reborn sunlight, which during the winter has been light just to the name. Once the sun has lifted on the snow cover, various ferns quickly stick their tightly clenched fists out of the barely warmed ground. This coiled way of growing goes by the name circinate vernation and is also found in completely different genera of plants. The most delicate parts of the plant are protected from pests and weather, while older and covering leaves can start photosynthesis and provide energy for continued growth. The shoots of the fern can also be likened to a shepherd's staff or the carved head of a violin, and in English they are often sold under the name fiddleheads.
Ferns quickly establish themselves with creeping rhizomes and root shoots and can withstand both bright sunlight and periods of drought once they have taken root.

Efficient design
Ferns have an unmistakable appearance and are easy to recognize, although different species can be difficult to distinguish.
In fossils, you can also see that ferns have not changed much in shape through the millions of years. Despite the simple, narrow and finger-like shape in the smallest details of the leaves, the entire leaf branches out in such a way that with a small leaf mass it covers a surface effectively, which benefits the fern in the battle for sunlight with other plants.

Strutbräken is a mammoth fern that can grow up to 150 cm if it thrives. It spreads willingly with underground shoots, so you have to stick to it if you do not want it in the whole discount.

2. Ricin

Castor oil, which is extracted from the plant's seeds, is often used in cosmetics, lubricants and laxatives. But trying to extract the oil on your own is not a good idea - the seeds are also very toxic.

The seeds look like beans, have a hard shell and are often marbled in white, gray, brown or black. If you happen to chew a seed, it can take up to several hours before the symptoms appear. Vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain that can lead to fluid loss are common symptoms. In severe cases, the kidneys can also be affected.

Especially small children should be kept away from the plant, as the seeds can in the worst case lead to death.

Summary

Description

Called evergreen privet for its ability to retain its leaves well into winter. Dense robust growing method that makes it very suitable as a cut hedge. Blooms with white flowers in June and sets blue non-toxic berries in autumn. Cut twice a year and can withstand heavy pruning. Very popular and is one of our most common cut hedges. It thrives on most soils and goes well in sun / partial shade. In shady conditions, it may be slightly sparser.

We have one of the industry's largest assortments of outdoor (barrot) hedge plants. It is a range that is usually difficult for the average homeowner to come across. The advantage for you as a customer is larger, coarser and more branched plants with a more developed root system.

Pot-grown hedge plants have a much harder time spreading their roots and you miss something or a few years when establishing them.

In order for the plants not to lose quality, we recommend that you receive your plants as soon as possible after you have received a notification from us. Remember that it is living material.

This tree is grown outdoors and is sent with a bare root system. The advantage for you as a customer is larger and coarser plants. You could say that the plants are more "in progress" and handled correctly, so you reach the result you intended faster. These plants are stored in the refrigerator and are thus sent completely bare without leaves or buds. But as soon as the plant gets into the soil and gets water, the buds come.

The season for bare-rooted hedges is from March to about midsummer and October to December. Bar-rooted hedge plants should not be planted during the summer as the weather is far too hot and sunny and will then not be able to establish itself. If you are going to plant during the summer, choose a pot-grown hedge instead.

Note that the pictures represent a full-grown specimen.

10 giftiga växter i trädgården
