Indian onion (tailed birdhouse)

Now you will not surprise anyone with exotic plants. Many people grow them on their windowsills in apartments and houses. Among them you can find and indian onion with spectacular leaves and colorful blooms. People call him “wonderful doctor". It is not only an attractive ornamental plant, but also curative. In folk medicine, it has a different name - tailed poultry farm... It can be grown both outdoors and indoors.

Indian onion is an unpretentious plant. His homeland is South Africa, which is why the poultry farm is so persistent and hardy. Can live to be 30 years old. In our latitudes, it is grown as a perennial bulbous plant. The plant does not impose special conditions on its owners. With proper care, the leaves of the tailed poultry farm will actively grow, and this exotic flower will delight you with long flowering.

Outwardly, the Indian bow looks very original. Growing back, long thin leaves take on unique shapes. A green tuber with thin white-cream scales, which is located on the surface of the earth, eventually turns into a ball. The flowering of the poultry farm is just as unusual. First, a flower arrow appears, which rapidly stretches in length, and then small original and graceful flowers are shown. Numerous flowers are discreet, greenish in color. After flowering, the peduncle must be cut off so that the poultry farm does not waste energy on setting seeds. Many novice growers often confuse Indian onions with nolina. Outwardly, they are very similar.

Indian onion care at home

The poultry garden can be grown both at home and in the garden. On a personal plot, he is planted in an empty place. The plant grows quickly, gives a lot of planting material. The roots of Indian onions are one meter deep. They take care of him, as for all bulbous cultures. Indian onions must be watered, fed with complex fertilizers. In winter, the bulbs are dug up, all the children are carefully separated and placed in a cool place for wintering (refrigerator, basement).

The soil

In indoor conditions, the poultry farm needs to create optimal conditions. The plant needs a small pot with good drainage at the bottom. They plant it in an earthen mixture of sod, leafy soil and river sand (proportion 1: 1: 2). Only the lower part of the bulb is placed in the ground. The rest of it should remain on the surface of the earth. Thanks to this method of planting, you can painlessly separate the babies.

Watering

Indian onions need regular, moderate watering. Excessive watering will kill the plant. In winter, the poultry farm can be watered only when the top layer of the earth is completely dry. It is equally important that the air in the room where the plant is grown is humid. Dry air leads to yellowing and curling of the leaves. In order to avoid the development of diseases, it is necessary to regularly spray the air and the poultry farm itself. If Indian onions do not grow well, watering should be reconsidered. Excessive moisture leads to root rot. The plant can survive for 2-3 months without water.

Lighting

Much of the development of Indian bows depends on lighting. The plant is unpretentious and will grow well on shaded windows. But the plant will feel most comfortable on the south or east window. If this is not possible, the poultry farmer needs to arrange "sunbathing", take it out for a week every month on a bright window. This can make up for the lack of light. It should be remembered that the poultry farm must be protected from the hot rays of the sun. In summer, the plant can be taken out to the balcony or planted in open ground before the first frost. In the garden, the roots of the poultry farm grow strongly, they can be easily damaged during transplantation. But a large number of children are formed near the bulb, which can be used for vegetative reproduction.

Top dressing

When growing a poultry farm indoors, it must be fed regularly. Mineral and organic fertilizers are suitable for him. It is useful to feed Indian onions with mullein infusion. Once a month, the plant can be watered with a weak solution of potassium permanganate or tincture of wood ash.

Transfer

In order for the poultry farm to please with abundant and colorful flowering, it should be repotted regularly. He responds well to this procedure. When replanting a flower, you need to pick up a new pot. It should be 2 centimeters larger than the old one.

Temperature

Indian onions tolerate room temperature well. This is a thermophilic plant, so in winter the temperature in the room should not drop below 12 ° C.

Reproduction

There are several ways of breeding the tailed bird house. A new plant can be obtained easily and simply. The fastest and most effective method is to separate the little onion babies from the mother bush. Tiny children are separated in the fall and placed in containers with moist soil. Some onions will not have roots. There is nothing wrong with that. After two weeks, they will have an independent root system. They will be able to fully grow and develop.

They also practice sowing the harvested seeds and dividing the mother bulb in half. The seeds of the caudate poultry are small, black in color. Outwardly, they are very similar to onion seeds, they give good shoots. If you plant a seed in the ground, a small bulb will grow out of it. When the plant grows up, it is transferred to a larger pot with a hole for water.

The use of Indian onions in traditional medicine

Poultry tailed poultry can be used as an anesthetic, antimicrobial, wound healing agent. Mature leaves have medicinal properties. They are rich in colchicine. The plant sap contains calcium oxalate compounds. They treat wounds, bruises, joint pain. It is effective for headaches, helps with acute respiratory infections, viral diseases. To obtain medicinal juice, you need to take an old leaf and squeeze out the required amount of healing agent from it. If the tips of the leaf are dry, you must remove the dry part. To make the juice stand out better, you can make serifs on the sheet with a knife. It should be remembered that the Indian onion is a poisonous plant that causes allergic reactions. It is not suitable for internal use. Do not allow the juice of the poultry farm to get on the mucous membranes. When juice gets on open areas of the body, redness and itching appear. There may be a rash.

Indian onion is a phytoncide plant. It can be used to disinfect indoor air.

For headaches, Indian onion juice is rubbed into the temples, the back of the head. With symptoms of acute respiratory infections, you should rub the lymph nodes, the bridge of the nose, the area above the eyebrows.

Poultry

POULTRY TAIL (Ornithogalim caudatum) is a perennial garden ornamental bulbous plant from the Liliaceae family known as "INDIAN BOW". It has a round, shallow-sitting, green bulb covered with pale yellow scales. Flat linear leaves, 5 cm wide and 30 cm long, alternately grow from the bulb of the poultry plant, which are rolled up at the end into a tube. The leaves hang down, wriggling, sometimes dry out at the ends, but continue to grow at the base.

The plant has many names - Indian onion, Chinese onion, Mongolian onion, hellish root. The scientific name of the Indian onion is the tailed birdhouse (Latin Ornithogalim caudatum), because its long, belt-like leaves resemble a tail. The word "birdman" comes from the Greek word - ornis - bird and gala - milk and means - "bird's milk". The name of the plant in English, apparently due to the star-shaped flowers, sounds like "Star of Bethlehem" (Eng. Star of Bethlehem). The German name can be translated as Milchsterne.

This is a perennial bulbous plant native to South America. The plant is common in the Mediterranean countries, as well as in Central and Southeastern Europe, India and China.

All poultry farms belong to the Liliaceae family, the genus Poultry farmers, and as you know, every family needs its own approach. Two species are grown in the room - pyramidal and tailed, and both have remarkable healing properties.

Umbrella poultry (Ornithogalum umbellatum L.)
The most popular of all poultry farms after the caudate is the umbrella poultry, or white brandy. It differs from the Indian onion primarily in its more modest size, the color of the leaves (the umbrella has a longitudinal white stripe), and the shape of the inflorescence (it is umbrella-shaped). Experts say that this is the only type of poultry, recognized by official medicine as a valuable source of colchicine - an alkaloid that treats gout, some autoimmune and oncological diseases.

As with all lily plants, the characteristic feature of the poultry farm is a large bulb, which is usually located shallow and simply sticks out of the ground. The bulbs are green in color and are impressive in size. This is a powerful plant, a real beauty overseas. In older plants, they can reach 15 cm in diameter.

There is a known case when the Indian onion grew from the owner for 20 years, possibly growing to this day. Not only is he a long-liver, this specimen is also surprising in its size. After transplanting into a large pot, the bulb has grown to 13 cm in diameter. Quite large and smaller side bulbs are annually separated from it.

The bulb of the poultry house is covered with pale, very thin scales that constantly fly off, and therefore it is practically unprotected. Down from the bulb are powerful roots, white, cord-like, numerous. From the bulb of Indian onions, flat linear and drooping leaves, rolled at the ends into tubes, alternately grow. In an adult plant, starting from 3 years of age, the leaf reaches a length of 1 m and a width of 5 cm. They do not stand straight, but lie down, wriggling. Sometimes their ends dry out, and the base continues to grow.

If everything is fine with the plant, then it blooms at the age of two or three, most often in the spring. A huge bulb with long straight leaves releases an arrow a meter high and blooms like a spikelet. At the end of the fallen arrow, greenish flowers appear, collected in a brush. Only one peduncle develops up to 100 white star-shaped flowers with green stripes. When the last flower blooms, the first has seeds ripening by this time.

How to plant an Indian onion correctly

Before planting, you should prepare the soil, for this you need to mix the following components in equal proportions:

  • leafy soil
  • turf soil
  • sand.

Experienced gardeners recommend planting Indian onions for everyone, growing at home is not difficult. The bulbs should be placed in clay pots. It is thanks to this material that the plant receives a sufficient amount of oxygen. Also, clay helps to cleanse the earth from salts and evaporate excess moisture.

The poultry house in a clay pot grows well

For the rapid growth of the plant, you need to root the babies in temporary containers. After they germinate and young leaves appear, they should be dug up and planted in a large pot with free space. An indoor bow should be planted following the following sequence of actions:

  1. At the bottom of the pot, it is necessary to pour expanded clay in a small layer. It helps prevent moisture stagnation and prevents root decay.
  2. With the second layer, you need to lay and tamp the soil mixture. Make a small hole in the center and water the ground. Water for this should be used only settled.
  3. A young onion must be placed in a hole and sprinkled with earth.

Then it is recommended to put the pot on a windowsill or in another warm place with direct sunlight.

Contraindications and harm

Despite its medicinal properties, Chinese onions have a toxic juice that can cause allergic reactions. Therefore, before using poultry-based products, it is recommended to consult with your doctor. In addition, an allergy test is carried out: a drop of the drug is applied to the elbow bend. A slight burning sensation and redness are considered acceptable.

It is forbidden to take poisonous milk from the poultry farm, therefore, tinctures and decoctions from the plant are used only as external agents. Do not allow the juice to get on the mucous membranes, the poultry farm is especially dangerous for the eyes.

In case of contact with milk, you need to immediately rinse them with running water, and then drip a sedative.

It is forbidden to use medicinal products during pregnancy and hemophilia. It is strongly not recommended to exceed the dosage and use infusions and decoctions too often. When caring for the plant at home, it is better to use gloves. Keep the onion pot away from children and pets.

Indian onion growing technology

High quality substrate

The growth of ornithogalum depends on the quality of the substrate.

The tailed bird prefers permeable soil. For cultivation, you should prepare a mixture of sod and leafy soil, as well as clean river sand of medium grain size.

At the bottom of the container, it is imperative to lay out a layer of foam, expanded clay or pebbles.
When planting a poultry farm, it is necessary to stick only the lower part of the tuber into the soil.

Top dressing

In room conditions, the plant should be fed with complex preparations. For poultry farms, liquid organic fertilizers (pink potassium permanganate solution) or minerals are ideal. One procedure per month is enough.

Ornithogalum in a container

It is recommended to use a clay container for growing the culture.

A clay pot should be prepared for planting Indian onions. The plastic container is easily tipped over. Therefore, an adult flower with long leaves can be easily damaged. A fragile material often deforms due to the pressure of overgrown tubers.

Clay products fit perfectly into the interior of the site, gazebo or room. Natural breathable material facilitates the evaporation of excess liquid. Better air circulation in the substrate. Clay can remove harmful components, including salts, from the soil. After a few years of use, a characteristic white coating will appear on the walls of the product.

The plant is very sensitive to the environment. Initially, the tubers should be planted in a small flowerpot. As you grow, you need to change the container to a larger pot (the diameter of the new container should be 2 cm larger). An unhealthy look and rare inflorescences are clear signs of a lack of sufficient space for the development of a poultry farm.

You can maintain the decorative effect of the culture with regular feeding and sufficient lighting throughout the year. For normal development, Indian onions need to provide a dormant period.

In winter, you should provide a rest period for Indian onions.

In late summer or early autumn, gradually reduce the ambient temperature in the room. The plant will gradually begin to prepare for the winter period. After the leaves have completely wilted, you can reduce the watering in the pot. The onion can be left in the container. The flowerpot should be kept in the temperature range from + 6 to + 8 degrees. After the onset of a new growing season, you can resume the standard care regimen.

Decorativeness of the plant

As mentioned above, the plant is not only very useful, but also very beautiful. It can be used not only as a medicine, but also for decorating summer cottages, since Indian onions easily grow in open ground in the summer. Delicate charm of discreet, but at the same time very graceful and attractive flowers, juicy bright greenery of long fancy leaves will be a wonderful decoration for any flower bed. However, the plant does not tolerate severe cold weather, therefore, with the onset of autumn, the tubers of the poultry farm must be dug up, dried and harvested until spring for storage in a cool, dry place or transplanted into a pot and transferred for wintering indoors.

You can grow Indian onions outdoors using the knowledge of growing ordinary gladioli.
