Characteristics and description of the Golden Heart tomato

In addition to the usual red color for tomatoes, more and more multi-colored varieties are emerging. Heart of Gold is one of these unusual varieties of tomato, loved by gardeners for its properties.

Description and characteristics of the Golden Heart variety

This tomato owes its name to its appearance. The bright orange or yellow fruits grow into a symbolic heart shape. Tall, sturdy bushes are successfully grown both in the greenhouse and in the open field.

These tomatoes are characterized by early ripening and high productivity.

Several pieces simultaneously sing on one brush. According to the description, the height of a bush grown in greenhouse conditions can reach 1 meter.

Having planted these tomatoes once, a person tries to preserve the culture in his garden for the next years. Harvested seeds are great for planting next season.

The history of tomato breeding and the region of growth

For the first time, these tomatoes were bred in 1999 in Russia by the breeder of the research center Yuri Panchev. At first, the variety was intended for cultivation under cover, but after 2 years it was adapted to the conditions of open beds. Outdoor plants are more compact, slightly less tall than greenhouse specimens.

In the northern regions of the country, the Golden Heart is recommended to grow in greenhouses.

Advantages and disadvantages

The cultivation of these varietal fruits has many positive aspects.

  • Good appearance.
  • Early ripening.
  • Long-term storage.
  • Pleasant taste.
  • Suitable for canning.
  • The variety is undemanding to conditions, easy care.
  • Maintaining fertility throughout the summer season.
  • Disease resistance.

Unpretentious seedlings practically do not need additional influence, except that they need to be formed. The bush has many small green leaves and twigs, which are partially removed for better air and light access to the ripening vegetables.

Planting seeds

When buying planting material in a store, you should contact only trusted, reputable firms.

To multiply the variety, you need to take ripest and largest sample and extract seeds from it... There is no need to rush to pick an unripe tomato: the more ripe and softer it is, the better.

Harvesting is carried out in several stages: first, the planting material is separated from the pulp, then washed, and then dried. The easiest way to separate seeds from everything else is during the fermentation process. If you pour the vegetable with water in advance and cover the dish with a foil loosely, after a while the necessary contents will sink to the bottom on their own.

The characteristics of the selected fruit should correspond as closely as possible to the defining qualities of the variety for better purity and preservation in the future.

Seedling harvesting falls on last days of February or early March.

Seeds collected by hand are pre-aged in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for 12 hours. Then they are dried and immersed in the soil by 2 centimeters, sprinkled with earth on top and watered a little. The room should be warm and humid. At first, the sprouts are covered with a transparent film.

Sprouts with 2-3 leaves, dive into separate containers.

Transplanting seedlings into open ground

The most optimal period for planting grown plants in the soil is mid-May... By this time, the earth is warming up well, the threat of frost has passed. Planting in a greenhouse can be carried out already in the end of April.

Immediately before planting, the bed is poured with boiling water, fertilizer (superphosphate or wood ash) is placed in the prepared holes.

Growing conditions

In order for tomatoes to grow well and bear fruit, it is necessary for them take care of... The plant is provided with:

  1. Timely watering (1 or 2 times a week).
  2. Top dressing (once every two weeks)
  3. Loosening after every watering.
  4. Weed weeding.
  5. Mulching.
  6. Garter of long stems.
  7. Pruning a bush. The lower leaves are to be removed.
  8. Pinching the crown. This is done so that the vitality of the bush is not directed into excessive landscaping.

Features of fruiting varieties

A typical fruit of the Golden Heart weighs 90-120 grams... Individual specimens may grow up to 300 g... The first crop is harvested 85 days after rooting.

The variety bears better fruit if it is planted in soil with low acidity.

Each seedling is located forty or fifty centimeters from another seedling. Spraying flowers with a mixture of water and boric acid also has a beneficial effect on the result.

Experienced gardeners recommend cut off stepsons only at the beginning (up to the first brush), otherwise the yield indicators of the bush will decrease.

Diseases and their prevention

The described variety is not very susceptible to various diseases common to all tomatoes. But carrying out prevention still does not hurt.

The development of late blight, which is fatal for tomatoes, prevents timely pruning of foliagetouching the ground. The disease develops mainly in cold and rainy summers.

The risk of infection after the method used is significantly reduced, but it is necessary to observe the measure in it. Overdoing it, you can harm the bush and reduce the number of ovaries. Also, vegetable crops will benefit from treatment with preparations containing copper.

Fresh air is a preventive measure against the formation of top rot.

If fungal formations are seen on the deciduous cover and stem, then it is considered a well-known and effective method of combating them. manganese solution.

Resisting pests consists in spraying these bush plantings ammonia solution... Helps to cope with aphids and spider mites soapy water... If simple folk remedies are ineffective, then chemical preparations are used.

Not only beauty has earned the Golden Heart its recognition among those who annually grow it in their garden. The reason for this is its exquisite taste, generous fruiting and other properties.

Heart paradox. Tomato 'Heart of Gold'

This year is not a tomato one. I sowed many new varieties, grew wonderful seedlings, planted them in the ground, but May ruined everything. Returning cold weather, a parade of planets, an approaching comet, insufficient experience - I can't say which factor was decisive, but the harvest is extremely meager.

Tomato Golden Heart

However, there are tomato joys. One of the varieties that did not require any tricks and dances from me at all was 'Heart of Gold'.

This wonderful variety was bred by the Russian breeder Yu. I. Panchev and is recommended for all climatic regions. The variety was registered in 2001. I have the seeds from Agrofirma AELITA LLC.

Tomato 'Heart of Gold', seeds

The tomato is declared as an ultra-early ripening variety. Bushes are undersized, 5-7 fruits on the bunch.

Tomato brush 'Golden heart'

I have been growing this variety for several years already. What makes you happy?

  • Early ripeness - tomatoes appear early and delight all summer.
  • Compactness. The height of the bush is 50-60 cm. However, it requires formation, it had to be tied up.
  • High productivity. From a bush during fruiting I get up to 6 kg of fruit.
  • Few seeds. The tomato is not watery and fleshy.
  • Great taste. Sweetish, delicate, not astringent.
  • Almost every tomato fits easily into a glass jar.

Weight 222 g

The mass of tomatoes is small: 110-130 g.

Pulp tomato 'Golden heart'

The pulp of tomatoes is rich yellow, sunny, dense, fleshy. The increased beta-carotene content makes these tomatoes enjoyable for my liver.

I sowed 'Golden Heart' along with all the tomatoes on 03/06/2020, and on the 11th, loops with a germination rate of 100% already appeared. Further - everything is like everyone else: on March 21st - a pick, on April 5th, transplanted into a nursery, on May 2, the tomatoes went into open ground. There were no lunges with seedlings.

The May weather disasters slowed down the growth of tomatoes, but in June, despite the contrasting temperatures, it actively began to grow. Almost daily rains did not interfere, but delighted the 'Heart of Gold'.

Tomato bush 'Heart of Gold'

For me, this variety is very successful - the combination of a decent appearance, sufficient yield and excellent fruit taste suits me.

Tomato 'Golden heart'

This variety is also excellent in conservation, the pulp in marinades and pickles remains dense, the skin is not coarse.

Combination of yellow and red

But ... the expected fruit in the form of a heart did not work, although this does not spoil the variety at all.

All tomatoes from one bush

Growing conditions

The variety is very susceptible to soil fertility and growing conditions. Therefore, in order to obtain significant yields, it is necessary that the place of cultivation of tomatoes meets the following requirements:

  • The best suited for growing this variety are ordinary chernozems fertilized with organic matter, sod and sandy loam soils.
  • To reduce the cost of carrying out weed control, it is recommended to select areas with a small amount of weeds. Particular attention should be paid to the presence of perennial weeds on the site (sow thistle, spurge, wheatgrass, wormwood). These weeds develop very quickly and can greatly oppress tomato plants. The presence of 2 pieces of the aforementioned weeds per 1 sq. m. If their number exceeds the specified limit, then it is better to find another place or in the fall to treat the site with continuous herbicides (Hurricane, Roundup).
  • Waterlogged soil negatively affects the growth of the root system of tomatoes and development in general. Therefore, rainwater should not accumulate in the selected area or groundwater should not come out to the surface.
  • Illumination is a very important factor when growing this variety. The illumination of tomato plants should be uniform throughout the day. In greenhouse conditions, the illumination can be adjusted using various lighting fixtures.
  • The best predecessors of this variety are legumes, early cabbage and carrots. It is not recommended to grow the variety after nightshade crops, as this can end up in the infection of tomatoes with various diseases.
  • For high-quality and easy weeding and irrigation, it is necessary that the site has a flat surface.

Required soil

After harvesting the predecessor, they begin to cultivate the soil, since the rapid growth and high yield of this variety largely depends on this. The tillage process can be divided into the following stages:

  • Having finished removing the fruits of the predecessor, you need to rake out the tops and various debris from the site using a rake.
  • To destroy weeds and loosen the soil, it is recommended to carry out two continuous weeding with a break of 7-8 days.
  • In mid-September, the soil is fertilized with rotted manure (7.2-7.5 kg. Per 1 sq. M.) Or compost (8.4-9 kg. Per 1 sq. M.).
  • A few days after fertilization, you need to dig (plow) the area to a depth of 19-21 cm.
  • In early April, it is necessary to begin leveling the soil cultivated in the fall. These works should be started as soon as the tops of the boulders begin to dry out. To do this, you can use a rake, light toothed harrows or a walk-behind tractor with a cutter. For better soil cultivation, the work must be carried out several times. Spring leveling of the soil is a very important event, since the success of further caring for tomato plants largely depends on its quality.
  • Before the time for planting seedlings, you need to monitor the shoots of weeds, and as soon as they appear on the surface, weeding should be carried out immediately by 3-4.5 cm.

Growing seedlings

The variety can be propagated by seedlings or by sowing seeds into prepared soil. The first method is more profitable, because it allows you to get a larger yield and shorten the growing period for the fruits of this variety. Seedlings can be bought on the market or grown using the following technology:

  • Seeds are bought at a gardening store and carefully sorted out. Good seedlings are suitable for growing seedlings, with a typical color and no rot.
  • If the purchased seeds are not processed, then the seed material must be disinfected at home. To do this, you can use the industrial preparations Maxim and Vitavax 200 FF or simply wet the seeds for 30 minutes in a solution of potassium permanganate (2%).
  • As a container for growing seedlings, you can use various cups or specialized cassettes. The main thing is that the containers have a width of at least 10 and a depth of 12 cm.
  • It is very important to choose the right soil mixture. You can buy ready-made soil mixture at gardening stores, or you can prepare it at home. To do this, it is recommended to mix humus, turf soil and sand in equal proportions.
  • After filling the soil in the container, abundant watering is carried out and after that, 2 seeds are placed in each glass to a depth of 1.2-1.5 cm.
  • Sprinkle the cups with dry soil on top and cover with transparent plastic wrap.
  • Before the emergence of shoots, you need to maintain the air temperature from +23 + 25 degrees.
  • As soon as seedlings appear, the temperature should be reduced to + 16.
  • In the future, systematic care is carried out, which consists of 2-3 additional dressings (crushed nitroammofoska 15-16 g for 8-9 liters of water) and regular watering.
  • In order for the seedlings to take root quickly, it is necessary to harden it.
  • Strong and viable tomato seedlings should have a height of at least 20-23 cm above the ground, 2-4 mm. the thickness of the root collar and the length of the root system are 12-17 cm.

Transplanting

If the variety is planned to be grown in a greenhouse, then the seedlings must be planted in the soil no later than the end of April. When growing seedlings in open ground, it is advisable to plant them not earlier than the end of May. The main thing is that the plants do not suffer from recurrent frosts. Planting seedlings consists of the following works:

  • Digging holes 18 cm deep and 20 cm wide.
  • The distance between the holes should be 35-40 x 60 cm. In greenhouses, plants can be staggered. In this case, the approximate density of tomato plants should be 3 pieces per 1 sq. m.
  • Each hole should be fertilized with 10-11 g of nitroammophoska and 100-150 g of rotted manure.
  • Immediately before planting seedlings, the hole must be watered with water.
  • Seedlings are carefully removed from the cups and, placing them in the center of the hole, sprinkle the roots with soil.

Watering plants

Plants of this variety should be watered regularly according to the following scheme:

  • Newly planted seedlings are watered for one month in 2-3 days. At least 3 liters are poured for each plant. water.
  • During April - May, tomatoes need to be watered once a week with a rate of 7.4-8 liters. per plant.
  • In the hotter summer period, the amount of watering should be increased up to twice a week at 9.7-10 liters. one bush.
The main condition for watering this variety is the temperature of the irrigation water from +20 to + 24 degrees. Plants need to be watered only at the root, not on the leaves.

Weed control

As soon as the planted seedlings get stronger in a new place, you need to immediately start fighting weeds. After all, weed vegetation grows very quickly and can drown out young tomato plants. Weeds should be controlled immediately after emergence on the surface. At this time, they do not have a powerful root system and to destroy weeds, it is enough to weed to a depth of 1-2 cm. In the future, throughout the entire cultivation time of this variety, the destruction of weeds should take place in a timely manner and without damaging the tomato plants. The maximum permissible weeding depth is 6-8 cm. If perennials (wheatgrass, wormwood, euphorbia) prevail among the weeds, then it is better to use the Roundup herbicide against them (47-50 ml for 8.5-10 liters of water). This treatment should be carried out in the fall before the main tillage or a few weeks before the seedlings are planted.

Top dressing

You need to feed the variety with various fertilizers with the advantage of using organic matter:

  • As soon as the seedlings take root, you can feed them with a solution of ammonium nitrate, which is prepared by dissolving 15-17 g of fertilizer in 11.5-12 liters. water. The plant should have from 2 to 3.5 liters. solution.
  • After 15-16 days, you need to feed the variety with a solution of chicken manure prepared in a ratio of 1:13. You need to spend at least 3-3.5 liters per bush. this solution.
  • For more abundant flowering and better fruit set, it is recommended, a few days before flowering, to carry out leaf treatment with Pennant. The recommended dosage is 17-19 liters. 7-8 liters. water.
  • When the fruits of the tomatoes begin to grow rapidly in size, you need to feed the plants with liquid mullein. It is necessary to add from 3 to 5 liters to the bush. the above solution.

Forming a bush

The variety needs proper shaping of the bush. There are several ways of forming, but the simplest is the way of forming a bush into one stem:

  • All stepsons are regularly removed and one central shoot is left.
  • The lower leaves are removed before flowering begins.
  • To increase the size of the fruit, you can remove some of the flowers.

Tying bushes

For better care of the bushes and easier harvesting of fruits, you need to tie up the tomato plants. The garter should be carried out as soon as the planted seedlings take root. To do this, you need to prepare in advance a sufficient number of wooden pegs and twine. These pegs are driven into the soil at a distance of 33-35 cm from the plant and a garter is made as it grows. You can build a trellis, consisting of several stakes, which are hammered in a row of tomatoes at a distance of 2 m from each other. From above, the stakes are connected with a crossbar, to which the twine is attached.

Pest control

The variety is quite resistant to disease, but can suffer greatly from such a pest as the Colorado potato beetle. The homeland of this pest is Mexico. An adult beetle has a length of 9-13 cm and a width of 7-8 cm.In winter, the pest is located in the soil at a depth of 5 to 50 cm.When spring comes and the soil warms up to + 13 degrees, the pest comes to the surface and begins to search for potato plantations or other crops of the Solanaceae family. Having found such plants, the pest starts laying eggs, which are mainly located on the underside of the leaf. One female can lay up to a thousand eggs during the season. The larvae that appear over time begin to feed intensively and are able to destroy the entire aerial part of the tomatoes in 4-5 days. Control measures:

  • Spraying with insecticides Prestige and Masterpiece.
  • The use of biological drugs Batsikol or Dendrobacillin.
  • Joint cultivation of tomatoes and garlic or beans is carried out.
  • Spraying tomatoes with broths of wormwood and celandine.

Harvesting

The picking of tomato fruits is started when the fruits of this variety are fully ripe. Cleaning should be done regularly at intervals of 2-3 days. You need to pick fruits that are ripe with a typical skin color and no signs of rot on the surface of the tomatoes. The harvested crop must be sorted by size and put into boxes. To store fresh tomato fruits for 1-2 weeks, it is recommended to set the room temperature at + 1 + 3 degrees.

Transfer to the ground

Hardened, strong tomato seedlings can be planted in open ground no earlier than mid-May. If you plan to transport plants, then the box is covered with polyethylene - this will help protect the seedlings from sudden temperature changes and drafts. There is no need to water the tomatoes before the trip.

Before planting in open ground or greenhouses, you can prepare the soil: pour hot water over the holes and pour a mixture of superphosphate and wood ash into them (1 tablespoon in each is enough). When planting in pre-prepared holes, tomato seedlings are placed together with a lump of earth in which it grew. After that, it must be dug in and watered.

You can see how the Golden Bull Heart tomato seedlings are planted in the photo. Judging by the reviews, plants cannot be placed too close. The row spacings are made more than 60 cm wide, 50 cm are left between the seedlings. No more than 3-4 plants are planted per 1 m 2.

The bushes grow tall, so a garter is indispensable. This will prevent the possible fall and breakage of the stems under the weight of large tomatoes. The stem is tied to a rope as it grows. Also, many recommend removing the lateral processes: it is better to leave 1-2 main stems.

Watering the Golden Heart of the Bull is necessary as soon as the topsoil dries out. For irrigation, take warm, settled water. If there is a tank at the summer cottage, then it is better to first draw water into it. In the absence, many adapt old baths for these purposes.

The experience of cultivating yellow-fruited tomatoes is of interest.

I was lucky when all the seeds of the Golden Heart tomato, acquired by chance, sprang up together. The seedlings have grown surprisingly strong with a luxurious root system. Transplanted in early June to the beds. At the end of summer, I was struck by a bountiful harvest of even, dense fruits, some of which turned yellow on the bushes. The taste is excellent.

Victor, 42 years old, Rostov-on-Don

I planted Golden Heart tomatoes for several seasons. I still admire the good fruiting and pleasant taste of the beautiful yellow fruits. We preserve them, freeze them, so we enjoy gourmet products all winter.

Tomatoes with the expressive name "Golden Heart" leave no one indifferent. Subject to the correct agricultural technology, it is possible to get a decent harvest of pleasant-tasting fruits with a decorative orange-yellow color.
