Tomato varieties for open and closed ground

Features of growing tomatoes in open and closed ground. Part 1

It is hard to imagine that 30 years ago no one even thought of growing tomatoes in the gardens of our region. But now, on the contrary, it is difficult to find a vegetable garden in which tomatoes are not grown.

Tomatoes - these are delicious salads, wholesome juice, incredible ketchups and all kinds of winter preparations.

Everyone has long been convinced of the benefits of tomatoes from their own experience: good health, a wonderful complexion, a desire to do something useful for humanity - all this gives a vegetable garden with tomatoes. It is clear that the point here is not only the richness of the fruit with vitamins and mineral salts.

For example, recently, scientists told us that a substance was found in tomatoes - lycopene, thanks to which the tomato becomes orange-red, - this substance has biological activity, neutralizes free radicals and other toxic substances. So now, without tomatoes, a vegetable garden is not a vegetable garden.

Breeders, seeing such a craving for tomatoes, immediately set to work. Previously, growing tomatoes in our region was a very troublesome business, after all, a tomato is a southern plant. Now they have developed new varieties that make it easier to work with this plant: high-yielding, early maturing and cold-resistant, disease-resistant, moreover, tolerating increased soil acidity and even drought. The latter quality is important not only for the southern regions, but also for ours, for those gardeners who choose their plots only once a week.

Each gardener sets his own goals and objectives for growing tomatoes. Some are grown for sale, others - to feed a large family with fresh vegetables and make more preparations for the winter; some like to amaze themselves and their neighbors with exoticism or to show some unusual tomato at an exhibition. There are varieties for all tasks.

Today there is an incredible number of tomato varieties for literally every taste. Now there are tomatoes, white, green, yellow, orange, pink, red of all shades, brown, striped and speckled. In addition to color, they have different fruit shape, size and taste, different shape and height of the bush, purpose, they also differ in resistance to different growing conditions and different diseases.

A gardener from Sweden has put together a collection of varieties in which we have hitherto unseen tomatoes. For example, there are fruits that, in cross-section, give a silhouette of a chamomile, or ampelous tomatoes, whose stems hang down. They can be planted in hanging vases in the room, in the loggia, on the balcony. True, the seeds of such varieties are only in Sweden.

Every year every reputable seed company offers many new varieties, some of which are well-forgotten old varieties. It is clear that it is impossible to list them. We can only talk about some noteworthy new products. True, advertising of varieties offers them exclusively in an excellent degree as the most - the most productive, tasty and unpretentious in the world, etc. Sometimes there are simply inaccuracies in it.

For example, to attract buyers, it is said that the variety does not need pinching. We must constantly remember that in our area everything must be pinned, otherwise the harvest simply will not have time to ripen. Or even more "cool" advertising: they offer varieties that, they say, can withstand frosts down to minus 5 degrees. It also needs to be treated critically.

So, about the varieties:

Tomato varieties for open ground and the simplest film shelters

In the Leningrad Region, only a few varieties can yield in the open field, and even then in its southern half and in hot summer. In general, under open ground, they often mean beds covered with one or another film, and in cold weather they also use additional insulation there.

Of the old varieties, the following varieties have proven themselves well here: White filling, Dubok, Gruntovy Gribovsky, Agata, Nevsky, Danna, Moskvich, Early 83 and many others. Newer ones are Boney M, Beta, Alaska. Snowdrop, Yamal, Taimyr, Snegurochka, Little Red Riding Hood are doing well. All of them give small fruits - 35-100 grams each. The super-early ripening varieties Milashka, Masquerade ultra-early, Alpha, Chinese early, as well as an ultra-early-ripening variety with original transparent yellow rounded fruits of 70-90 g each, Amber, early-ripening Far North SeDeK, have shown themselves well.

Gardeners also succeed in a variety with significantly larger Gin fruits - up to 300 g. There are many other varieties, however, they give less stable yields, and not all have been verified by sufficient experience.

This year, breeders offer new items that can be grown under temporary film shelters and in the open field, for example, some of them are the fastest ripening:

Atom - bush up to 60 cm tall, standard. Fruits are round, slightly flattened, dark red, weighing 80-100 g or more, dense.

Darling - unpretentious variety. Bushes are low, abundant fruiting, amicable and early ripening. Fruits weighing about 85 g, round, smooth, deep red, very dense, fleshy. Excellent taste, with a high content of lycopene.

Maroussia - charming bushes 60-70 cm high, abundantly strewn with bright red fruits weighing 60-80 g plum-shaped. Fruits are dense with a strong skin, for whole-fruit canning. Medium early variety.

Pink souvenir - a variety with pink fruits, 70-80 g. Fruits are even, dense, sweet. The bush is low.

F1 Nimble - an early ripe standard hybrid. Fruits are plum-shaped, dense, leveled, weighing 60-80 g each, perfect for all types of canning. It bears fruit abundantly, the harvest gives in unison.

Thus, there is a choice, although I have listed only a small part of the new products, choosing the best ones from them.

Indoor tomato varieties

There are much more novelties for closed ground. Of course, first of all, in greenhouses it is necessary to plant varieties that have been well tested by you and other gardeners. For example, who can say a bad word about Verliok's famous old F1 hybrid? And there are a lot of such varieties and hybrids, professional and amateur. Every gardener always has his favorite variety. I will briefly introduce you to some of the latest innovations that, in my opinion, deserve attention.

From my own experience, I was convinced of the high yield of these varieties.

Thus, there is a lot to choose from among the new products.

L. Bobrovskaya,

Of the shortcomings of this indeterminate (sometimes it grows up to 2 m) tomato - only the need for a bush in support and formation. The rest is a set of advantages! It is resistant to adverse conditions and can grow even in Siberia and the Far East. It bears fruit well not only in the greenhouse, but also in the open field. It is not afraid of the main diseases of the nightshade.

"In the greenhouse, I am always pleased with the variety Chio-chio-san from "Gavrish". Maria Dolzhikova.

According to the ripening period, the tomato belongs to medium early - from the appearance of the first shoots to the beginning of fruiting, 100-120 days pass. It will not fail with the harvest either - although the tomatoes are small (on average about 30-40 g), but they ripen up to 50 pieces. on the brush! So the harvest from a bush with proper care is 4 kg and can reach a record 6 kg. And the taste of this tomato is excellent! And in the blanks, it looks very presentable.

"Chio-chio-san - sweet, very productive, tall, in a brush up to 50 pieces of even thin-skinned sweet tomatoes! Universal for food and preservation. "Tatiana Vznuzdaeva. Tula region.

Review of tomato varieties (tomato) for greenhouses and open ground

Tomato varieties for greenhouses and open ground

Conditions growing tomatoes in greenhouses, film shelters and in the open field very different. In greenhouses, there is high air humidity and high temperatures.

Usually plants tomato, intended for cultivation in the open field, lose their fruiting qualities in greenhouses. And vice versa, tomatothat do great in greenhouses, just wither away, growing in the open field.

However, there are exceptions. Exist tomato varietiesthat are adapted to different environmental conditions and feel great both outdoors and in glazed and film greenhouses.

Indeterminate type - plants of unlimited growth (tall).

Determinant type - low tomato plants (up to 50 cm tall). Plants are stocky, with a strong erect stem.

Semi-determinant type - medium-sized tomato plants, occupying an intermediate position between the indeterminate and determinant type.

Ripening period- is considered from the day of emergence to the day of technical maturity of the fruit.

! It is interesting. The important Señor Tomato comes from the Pacific coast of South America, where it was cultivated by the Indian tribes, who gave the name to the genus - tomato.

It was brought to Europe by Columbus at the end of the 15th - beginning of the 16th century under the Latin name "company amoris", which means "apple of love", and "company d'oro -" golden apple ", where our native" tomatoes "came from.

And if the name "golden apple" is easy to decipher, since the first tomatoes were yellow-fruited, then the "apple of love" sounds intriguing: why would it be? It turns out that everything is simple: the attractive beginning, which awakens wonderful feelings, is the juicy bright red color of the fruit, due to the content of lycopene, which belongs to the well-known group of carotenoids.

The fiery "pigment of passion" has pronounced antioxidant properties, strengthens the immune system, increases vitality and even, as recent studies say, serves as a good tool for the prevention of cancer.

Features of black tomatoes

Even 10 years ago, only a few varieties of black tomatoes could be found on the domestic market. Today, gardeners can choose from a huge number of varieties that differ in their characteristics. These varieties have a common property - the indeterminate type of bush. Because of this, such tomatoes can be grown in central Russia, the Leningrad region, Siberia, the Urals and other regions of the Russian Federation exclusively in greenhouses, since the tomatoes will not have time to ripen in a cool open field.

Black tomato varieties can have a brown, purple or burgundy skin color, although from the outside they appear to be black.

Feature of black-fruited tomatoes:

  • Shades. The dark, rich color is the result of the action of the anthocyanin pigment.
  • These tomatoes are rich in vitamins and minerals, thanks to which they provide the normal functioning of the body.
  • Unusual taste. Their pulp has a different ratio of sugars to acids compared to regular varieties, so they are sweeter with a fruity aftertaste.
  • The fruit has a delicate flesh and thin skin. So that the tomatoes do not lie on the ground, it is necessary to tie the stems and brushes of the bushes to the support.
  • For the most part, black tomato varieties are not suitable for canning.

Variety or hybrid?

Indoors, the advantage of hybrids (in all respects, except for the taste and weight of the fruit) is more obvious. For open ground, breeders also offer resistant varieties of tomatoes of hybrid origin, they are resistant to diseases and temperature contrasts.

But numerous reviews indicate that amateur gardeners still prefer non-hybrid forms - they are considered more tasty and aromatic, and besides, you can get your own seeds from them (this is free, plus a guarantee of germination and varietal purity).
