Roof ridge: types, features, do-it-yourself assembly and installation

When arranging the roof, all the elements are important. Each of them performs a specific function, and the coordinated work of the roofing components ultimately makes the roof reliable, durable and attractive.

Roof ridge - design features

It can be said without exaggeration that the ridge is the crown of the roof, the final touch of its construction. For a long time, this roofing detail has been attributed considerable importance, decorating with carvings and various figures, regardless of whether it is a rural hut or a noble estate.

On the old roofs, the ridge served as a log - ochlupen, necessarily decorated with a carved or carved out of wood figurine of a horse, rooster or bird

This custom has survived to this day. Today, many developers also use carved or forged pictorial fragments to decorate the ridge, which are originally combined with any of the modern roofing coverings.

The ancient custom of decorating the ridge of the roof with carved or forged fragments can often be found in the design of modern private houses.

Why is there such an honor to this seemingly not so essential element of the roof? It turns out that everything is simple - in addition to the decorative purpose, which gives completeness and perfection to the entire appearance of the house, the ridge in the full sense of the word protects the building, because:

  • serves as a barrier to atmospheric precipitation on the path of penetration into the under-roof space;
  • provides natural ventilation of the roof, significantly extending the service life of all layers of the roof carpet and rafter frame.

The main purpose of the roof ridge is to ensure free air exchange in the under-roof space

The ridge has any roof, except for a flat structure, domed, onion, shed and hipped, which has only ribs.

The ridgeless pitched roofs look original and stylish, the construction of which will require much less financial resources and labor costs

It is necessary to distinguish between the ridge of the roof and the ridge of the roof. These are different concepts, although they are usually combined into one. The ridge of the roof is a part of the load-bearing base, the upper horizontal edge, obtained by mating the slopes. According to its structure, it can be of two types: the first option is a beam on vertical racks, on which the upper parts of the rafter legs rest, and the second is a run laid over the rafter connection.

The ridge of the roof is equipped in two versions - with the laying of the ridge beam on vertical posts or with the laying of the ridge girder over the junction of the upper part of the rafter legs

The roof ridge is designed to cover the gap at the highest point of the roof formed when the covering material is laid on the slopes. This is already a component of the roof railing system, which is called a ridge strip and, together with the accompanying parts - a seal and a plug - refers to additional forming elements.

The key function of the roof ridge is to close the top edges of the roof deck and securely connect the slopes

A roofing ridge can be:

  • angular shape;
  • conical, rectangular or semicircular;
  • embossed, ribbed or curly.

Roofing skates - products of a certain shape, size and configuration

Most often, the ridge of the roof is made of the main type of covering. But sometimes it is mounted in a contrasting color or from another material, although in any case the ridge looks beautiful, favorably emphasizes the outline of the roof, if, of course, it is done carefully.

Most often, roof skates are made from the same materials as the main covering decking.

The covering material in the ridge assembly should not form a tight connection, so as not to disturb the free circulation of air under the roof.

The optimal height of the ridge ridge in relation to the size of the house

Aesthetic indicators, individuality and technical characteristics of the structure depend on the height of the ridge run, therefore it is very important to choose it correctly.

When constructing a roof, you need to know the height of the ridge in order to further calculate the required amount of materials for the manufacture of the rafter structure and covering the slopes

When calculating, you need to pay attention to the following values:

  1. Climatic loads - snow melts off steep slopes faster, but the wind tries to overturn high roofs, which is why it is undesirable to erect roof structures with a steep slope in regions with frequent and strong winds, or additional measures should be taken to maintain strength and safety. It is possible to determine the influence of atmospheric loads for a specific area on your own using the zoning maps included in the standard 20.13330.2011.

Atmospheric influences on the roof of the house is one of the factors influencing the choice of the ridge height

  2. The presence and purpose of the attic - for non-residential premises, the ridge should be at least 1.6 m high, which will allow you to move around the attic for preventive inspection and repair of the roof. The height of the attic is determined by the height of the tallest family member plus 30-40 cm of stock, but not less than 1.9-2.2 m from the ceiling to the cladding, and in the sleeping area 1.4 m.

What height the ridge will be depends on the functional purpose of the attic space

  3. The type of covering material - the minimum slope of the slopes, which directly depends on the height of the ridge, is recommended by manufacturers of roofing materials in the leaflets for their products, which must be observed. It is necessary to remember - the denser the covering flooring and the more airtight the joints, the more chances to make a flat roof, for which the costs will be lower. And when laying small piece shingles or heavy coatings, you will have to equip the roof structure higher, which will cost more.

The type of roofing offered is taken into account when calculating the slope of any pitched structure and, accordingly, the height of the ridge

The skate height is calculated in two ways: mathematical and graphic. The math is pretty simple. It is based on the rules of geometry and depends on the selected roof slope, according to the covering material, natural influences and the arrangement of the attic. The rise of the ridge is calculated according to the formula: H = ½ span width x tgα, where α is the angle of inclination of the slopes, and the span width is the distance between opposite supporting structures on which the rafters rest.

Mathematically, the height of the ridge is defined as the product of half the span width by the tangent of the slope angle

In order not to search for tgα on the Internet, there is a plate with ready-made values, which is convenient to use when calculating. For example, the width of the house is 8 m, the span is 7.14 m, the roof slope is 35º, then the height of the ridge rise is H = ½ 7.14 x 0.79 (coefficient 35º according to the table) = 2.82 m.

Table: coefficient for calculating the height of the ridge in proportion to the slope

Roof slope, in degrees →51015202530354045505560
Coefficient →0,080,170,260,360,470,590,790,861,01,221,451,78

The second calculation method is graphical, where the algorithm for determining the height of the ridge bar is as follows:

  1. We draw a roof scheme on a scale convenient for visual perception, most often 1: 100 (1 cm = 1 m) and put all known values on it.
  2. In the center of the span, at a right angle, draw a line upward, which will be the axis of the ridge's rise.
  3. With a protractor from the corner of the box, we postpone the planned slope and connect it to the ascent line.
  4. The resulting intersection point will indicate the height of the ridge bar.

The graphical method for determining the height of the ridge requires the creation of a scaled roof diagram.

Similarly, the rise of the ridge is calculated, but not its height, since the latter depends on the compression of the wood, the method of fastening the rafter legs, the thickness and width of the ridge run, the depth of the cut, etc.

Therefore, in practice, they do it easier - to calculate the full height of the ridge according to any calculation scheme, ⅔ of the thickness of the rafter board is added to the lift value. If this is not done, then when attaching to the Mauerlat and connecting to each other in the ridge knot, the rafter legs will sag, which will entail a decrease in the slope of the roof.

To determine the full height of the ridge, add ⅔ of the thickness of the rafter board to the amount of lift

Of course, such calculations are not flawless, but the error is insignificant and quite acceptable by regulatory enactments, in particular, SP 64.13330.2011.

Ridge additional elements

Roof skates are prefabricated devices inherent in both capital buildings and structures of small architectural forms. The most common are angular metal products with bends of at least 1.5–2.0 cm along the edges. The skates are completed with fasteners, seals and plugs, from which a sealed reliable structure is assembled, which prevents the roof from leaking.

Among the variety of ridge slats, the semicircular design forms the largest ventilation pocket compared to straight slats

In terms of color, material and shape, roofing ridge should be reasonably suitable for a specific structure and not violate its architectural style, which is why ridge extensions are designed for each type of covering material.

The most common are:

  • semicircular skates with the obligatory installation of plugs from the ends;
  • rectangular products are universal, suitable for use on roofs of any configuration and do not require the installation of plugs;
  • narrow ridge strips - are more used as decorative details on spiers, tent structures and gazebos;
  • curved complicated profiles that fix straight skates at the joints;
  • end caps are an addition to ridge elements for finishing and protecting gables.

An important role in the installation of roof ridge is played by seals, which are:

  • universal accessory components made of polyurethane foam and working like a filter - allow air to pass through, but block dirt and snow;
  • profile products made from foamed polyethylene, which are selected for the specific shape and size of the ridge strips;
  • as well as self-expanding acrylic-impregnated polyurethane foam extensions with an adhesive layer and designed to fill any voids.

Video: self-adhesive sealant

It is the seals that ensure the tightness of the structure, dryness in the under-roof room, the durability of all structural elements, increase wind protection, heat and sound insulation of the roof.

Ridge seals increase the thermal insulation properties of the insulation, protect the roof from moisture, cold, noise and other factors

For mansard roofs, where ventilation of the under-roof space is of great importance, masters advise to lay profile seals with the additional installation of roofing or pitched aerators.

To ensure the safety of all roofing elements and the optimal level of humidity in the under-roof space, ventilation systems are used, consisting of passage elements and ventilation outlets, due to which the exhaust air is naturally or forcibly removed from the room.

Passage elements are of several types and are selected depending on the covering material. Ventilation outlets are divided into pitched, mounted on roofs with a slope of up to 20º, and ridge products, installed on roofs with a slope of over 27º.

Ventilation systems ensure optimal humidity of the under-roof space and consist of ventilation outlets and passage elements

Installation of a ridge on various types of roofs

The type of roofing directly affects the installation method of the roof ridge, therefore, when choosing a covering material, you need to immediately think about how and which ridge will be installed, and simultaneously purchase all the shaped elements, which will greatly facilitate the independent installation of the ridge.

Installation of a ridge on a metal tile

According to SNiP II-26–76 *, the device of the ridge on a metal-tile roof is provided with a ridge strip, plugs and a sealant. In addition, when installing an insulated roof, a good exhaust duct with a diffuse waterproofing film must be provided in the ridge area.

Step-by-step execution of work:

  1. We check the geometry of the slopes - the discrepancy should not exceed 1–2 cm, otherwise it will be very difficult to install the ridge.
  2. We lay the seal, tamping it not too tightly to ensure good air circulation.
  3. We mount the ridge end pieces along the edge of the roof.
  4. We lay the cornice strip on one side of the ridge ridge, while it is desirable that the assistant monitors the evenness of the laying on the other side. After making sure that the ridge bar lies correctly, we fix it with self-tapping screws.

When installing additional ridge parts on a metal roof, their fastening should be carried out directly to the ridge bar

  5. We stretch the construction cord along the lower edge of the ridge ledge on both slopes in order to ensure the evenness and speed of laying the remaining elements.
  6. We mount the next plank with an overlap of 5–7 cm, aligning it with the cord.
  7. After all the elements of the ridge have been laid, we finally fix them with screws with a pitch of at least 80 cm.
  8. We install plugs, if required by the shape of the ridge products, which will give the roof a complete and well-groomed look.

When equipping a roof made of metal tiles, the ridge can always be harmoniously matched in color and texture

Installation of a ridge on polycarbonate

High-quality polycarbonate bends easily, allowing you to mount beautiful arched structures without skates. However, it is often necessary to pair reflective sheets in the ridge area, and then the question arises of competently attaching polycarbonate to the ridge ridge.

Ridge profile - a product designed for conjugation and protection of honeycomb polycarbonate panels in the ridge of translucent roof structures

Mostly for this, a polycarbonate ridge profile is used, which makes it possible to cheaply and conveniently arrange a ridge for almost any angle, but with observance of some features:

  • polycarbonate sheets cannot be mounted to the ridge rib end-to-end, otherwise a rather wide ridge profile without a gap of at least 40 mm will simply have nowhere to install;
  • it is advisable to fix a perforated tape on the edges of the polycarbonate near the ridge, which will allow moisture to pass through, but retain debris and dust;
  • light transmission sheets in the area of the ridge along the edge are not fixed, since the installation of the profile implies its attachment to the supporting base together with the sheets;
  • It is advisable to insert the connecting profiles holding the transparent sheet cover inside the ridge element. If this is not possible, the connecting profiles should be cut, and the joints should be filled with a neutral curing sealant.

Installation procedure:

  1. We lay the transparent covering, leaving the necessary gaps in the area of the ridge.
  2. We cover the ends of the sheets with perforated tape to ensure ventilation of the structure.
  3. Install the ridge profile and align it along its entire length.
  4. We check the depth of the gaps and, if necessary, correct it, preventing the ridge profile from touching the supporting base.
  5. We attach the ridge profile together with the upper edge of the polycarbonate sheets to the supporting frame with self-tapping screws.

Self-tapping screws and special thermal washers are used to fasten cellular polycarbonate and additional elements.

Installation of a ridge on a slate

When arranging a ridge for a slate roof, regulatory enactments recommend the laying along the ridge ridge of additional bars of the same section as ordinary sheathing boards (SNiP II-26–76 * p. 5.4.8).

As a ridge element, you can use factory-made ready-made strips designed specifically for asbestos-cement corrugated coatings, but it is also allowed to independently manufacture additional elements from boards knocked down at an angle, treated with an antiseptic and fire retardant, or from galvanized iron. In the latter case, it is necessary to provide that the height of the ridge and its overlap on the slate reliably protect the roofing structure from blowing wind and snow.

To equip a ridge on a slate roof, it is recommended to install an additional support, which significantly extends the life of this part of the structure and

The process of installing factory forming parts is as follows:

  1. We lay the shaped strips on the slopes on both sides of the ridge girder with the upper edges overlapping each other, having previously laid a roofing sheet 350 mm wide as a seal.
  2. We align in length and fix it through the wave with stainless screws or nails for slate.

For the roof of asbestos-cement sheets, shaped elements of the ridge strip in the form of a gutter are made, which are attached to the ridge beam with slate nails with rubber gaskets

Installation of a ridge on a corrugated board

For roofs made of corrugated board, the ridge ridge is formed, as in other roofing structures, as a result of joining the upper part of the rafter legs and is covered with a ridge strip made of galvanized steel. According to clause 6.7. SNiP II-26–76 * ridge additional elements must have a “comb” of the same shape as the cross-section of the covering profiled sheet.

The elements of the ridge are laid on the opposite side of the prevalence of winds and are fixed with self-tapping screws in the places where the ridge and the upper corrugation fit

Stages of the device of the ridge on the corrugated board:

  1. We lower the relief of corrugated sheets, for which we put a seal between the ridges and close it with pieces of boards.
  2. We lay a mosquito net along the lower edge of these boards, wrap it up and fix it with tape.
  3. We lay the ridge strips, align, cut along the fold axis and fix with rivets.

The ridge for a roof made of corrugated board is an integral part of the roof and, as a rule, is invisible, although in fact it plays one of the main roles in ensuring the reliability of the roof

  4. In four-slope structures, before laying the main ridge strips, we mount the ridge extensions on the hip ridges, which will help protect the attic from the penetration of atmospheric waters.

The most difficult nodes of a hip roof are the points of intersection of the ribs and the ridge, so their design requires special attention.

Laying the ridge on bituminous shingles

The main condition for forming a ridge on a soft tile is to equip the necessary ventilation gap during the installation of insulated roofs, the cross-sectional area of which is regulated by standards and is determined by the formula: f cm² / running. m = (2 x l x 100 x 0.05): 100, where 2 x l x 100 is the area of two slopes at a width of 1 m. This indicator must be at least 0.05% of the area of both slopes and not less than 5 cm² / m. With an increase in the length of the slopes, the area and height of the ventilation gap also increases, according to the values prescribed in the standards, presented in the lower table.

Table: area and height of the ventilation gap

Rafters length, m →67891011121314151617181920

A ventilated ridge is formed using roofing aerators installed with a pitch of 10-15 cm and interconnected. Although they often do without them, equipping a ventilation gap of the required section on a ridge run in the form of a triangular structure on bars.

Installation of ridge shingles should be carried out along the cut ventilation gap and along a stretched thread, since it is almost impossible to lay ridge shingles evenly without a guide

Video: roof ventilation

The ridge ridge is mounted from universal cornice-ridge tiles or cut ordinary shingles. The ridge fragments are fastened with four nails in such a way that each next part overlaps the fastening of the previous element. The laying of the ridge tiles begins from the end of the building, opposite to the direction of the prevailing winds in a particular area.

Ventilation of the roof made of bituminous tiles is carried out by means of a ridge, which is placed on a special ribbed profile

Skate on the roof with your own hands

It is not difficult to make a roofing ridge with your own hands, even without the skills of a roofer and a tinsmith. The most popular material for the manufacture of a ridge strip today is galvanized iron, which lends itself well to processing and is affordable. You can buy it both in the construction market and in building markets. It is allowed to use even trimmings, bending them yourself, but it is better to purchase ready-made galvanized corners 2 m long, 2.4–3.0 m wide.

Making a corner for a ridge element:

  1. On the scraps of the sheet, mark the fold line and tap it with a mallet. The use of a wooden hammer is essential, as a conventional hammer will inevitably damage the zinc coating of the sheet.
  2. Then, with light pressure, we bend the workpiece and, as a result of small efforts, we get the ridge profile we need. Moreover, if the length of the overlap of the plank is usually 10 cm, then the side of the corner should be at least 15 cm.

A simple ridge detail looks like a simple iron corner made of painted or unpainted galvanized steel, which is easy to make yourself

When installing the corner on the slate, it is supposed to stuff additional boards in the area of the ridge ridge. However, this can be abandoned by fixing the ridge element from the galvanized profile directly to the frame of the lathing, and use foam to seal the gaps between the home-made ridge and the roofing deck.

Making and installing a skate with your own hands is a very simple action, nevertheless, compliance with safety rules when working at height remains important.

Having realized what the roof ridge is and what functions are assigned to it, you can easily choose the best design for any type of rafter system. Correct installation of the ridge, competent calculation of the height, compliance with the standards and advice of manufacturers, as well as high-quality material - a guarantee of a durable and reliable roof. Good luck and may the newly built cozy house please you for many years.

How to make a greenhouse with your own hands: the best projects

Greetings to gardeners and everyone who still only dreams of living in their home. Elena is in touch and the topic of today's conversation is how to make a greenhouse with your own hands.

Even if you live in the south, you cannot do without a greenhouse: it helps to adapt seedlings to open ground, get early greens or shelter plants from sudden frosts.

When building a house for birds, you must:

1. It is worth starting with the main thing, with the material that can be used for construction - only wood, no plywood, no chipboard, no fiberboard - this is important! The fact is that the glue contained in these materials is toxic to birds, they will not live in your house, what you will do for them. Use wood from hardwoods, as conifers have a strong smell, unless you have pine planks somewhere in your yard that have been lying on the street for more than a year and the smell has disappeared. The boards that you have chosen for the birdhouse do not need to be sanded, they should be rough, especially the front wall inside the birdhouse, along which the bird will get out.

2. When you twist the side walls of the birdhouse, you can put insulation between them so that there are no gaps in the structure itself. As a heater, you can use a synthetic winterizer or linen.

3. The roof should be removable so that the birdhouse can be cleaned after the season, as it collects a lot of debris and molds. Here you can use not only wood, but also a metal sheet. So that it does not give off cold, you can put the same insulation under it. The roof should protrude about 7 cm forward so that the cat cannot reach the chicks with his paw from the roof. It is necessary to make the upper frame of the birdhouse at an angle so that the roof that will be attached to it is at a slight slope - this is necessary so that the water flows down and does not stagnate on it.

4. Be sure to attach the perch, the bird will land on it before going inside. The distance between the perch and the entrance is different for all birds - for starlings it is 24 cm.In addition, if the nest is established on a tree, then one perch will be enough for the birds, because there are still branches on which they can sit and sing songs. But if you hang your house, for example, on the side outer wall of the balcony, then it is worth making several perches.

5. The thickness of the walls of the bird house should be at least 2 cm in order to keep warm inside.

6. The bottom should not be very large, because then the birds can produce more eggs and will not be able to fully feed all the chicks, which will make them weak and sick. The bottom size for starlings should be 15 x 15 cm.

7. At the end of the season, in autumn, the birdhouse must be removed and cleaned of debris, as well as rinsed with boiling water to kill mold and harmful microflora that could develop there. Then dry and put indoors until spring. If the birdhouse is not removed, the birds may not settle there a second time.

8. If you want to make, for example, a titmouse, then it will be actual to hang it in the fall, since the birds do not fly away for the winter and they will have somewhere to spend the winter, and if they like this place, then in the spring they will bring their chicks to it.

1. You need to hang the birdhouse on a mount that will make it easy to remove after the season.

2. On the trunk of the tree, the birdhouse should be placed so that the entrance faces the east or southeast side: towards sunrise.

3. on the tree it is worth attaching a fence made of mesh to prevent cats and other small predators from going up to the birdhouse.

4. Install the birdhouse on trees that are not constantly in the shade or in the sun.

5. To establish a nesting place for birds on a tree or on other buildings is at a height of 3 meters from the ground, so that it would be more difficult or impossible for the animals that hunt them to reach them.

Do-it-yourself gazebos from scrap materials: photos of original solutions

Many summer residents store various materials in their workshops that remained after the construction of the main objects: metal profiles, lumber, plastic, tiles.

Thanks to resourcefulness and imagination, these remnants are successfully used by craftsmen for various needs.

Do-it-yourself gazebos from scrap materials are no exception: photos of creative structures confirm that, in terms of functionality and design, they are often in no way inferior to ready-made turnkey gazebos.

Ergonomic gazebo made from simple materials

Wood is the most popular material for the construction of arbors. Various wooden elements in the form of logs, planks, bars, plywood are available in any yard. Wood is easy to process, the tools necessary for the construction of structures made of wood are in the arsenal of almost every owner. Arbors made of wood are durable and fit organically into the design of any suburban area.

Original gazebo using wooden slats

A gazebo made of trunks cut down as unnecessary in the garden looks original.

The trunks themselves act as support posts, thicker branches are used for horizontal elements of the fence, thin branches serve as filling of the fences.

The shape of such gazebos is given very different: they can be round, oval, square, rectangular or multifaceted. Reeds, shingles or long branches can be used to cover the roof.

Arbor of an extraordinary shape made of ordinary wood

Wooden gazebos from the log house have a very attractive look. A massive structure made entirely of logs is quite an expensive pleasure. Therefore, very often, some elements of this material are included in the design of the gazebo. For example, logs are cut into small pieces and used only as support sections.

Cozy structure made of wicker branches

A gazebo, the fence of which is made in the form of a wattle fence, disposes to rest. For the racks of such a fence, stakes or bars are used, and for binding - shoots of hazel, willow or birch. A photo of a wooden gazebo for a summer residence will inspire you to create your own individual design in the garden.

An example of using felled tree trunks

Using stone, white or red brick to build a gazebo, they get a monumental and durable structure. Such structures can be both open and closed. In the latter version, they are equipped with doors, windows, and the resulting structure may well serve as a summer kitchen or a guest house.

Arbor scheme using various materials

If the brick remaining after construction is not enough for the construction of full-fledged walls, only the main supports can be constructed from the material.

The rest of the gazebo elements are performed by combining brick with other materials: a metal profile, wooden beam, polycarbonate and other residues are suitable.

It should be remembered that brick structures are quite massive and require a solid foundation, and this is associated with considerable costs.

Brickwork allows you to build a gazebo with barbecue

The gazebos, which contain masonry in their design, fit perfectly into the country landscape. The nearby picturesque alpine hills with stones and paved paths are especially organically combined with such buildings. But if you do not have sufficient experience in working with natural stone, it is better to invite a specialist for masonry.

Masonry construction

The structure is based on natural stone

Metal gazebos are quite common in the suburban exterior. The structures built from a metal profile have a light openwork appearance, although they are quite strong and durable. Such gazebos can serve for several decades. However, the construction of metal structures requires a welding machine and some experience with it.

The frame of the gazebo is made of metal, the inside is lined with wood

Metal works well with other materials. And to cover the roof in metal gazebos, polycarbonate, corrugated board, wood and other materials at hand are used. The combination of metal with other materials allows you to use everything you have in stock.

Arbor with the use of forged metal

As a rule, the roofing material repeats the covering of the main house, which favorably affects the maintenance of a uniform architectural style. Just two days - and the gazebo is ready with your own hands from scrap materials. A photo selection of metal structures will help you decide on the final version of the gazebo in your garden.

Scheme of a simple gazebo with a metal frame and a polycarbonate roof

Some metal structures of arbors are made collapsible. They can be easily and quickly dismantled and overwintered in a workshop or garage. An important requirement for all metal structures is timely surface treatment against corrosion.

Durable structures with openwork rods

Polycarbonate gazebos look especially attractive and relevant. This material is lightweight, durable and plastic. Thanks to the flexibility of polycarbonate sheets, you can give the structure any desired shape.

In addition, polycarbonate is flawlessly combined with other materials: metal profiles, wood, profile plastic, natural stone, brick, etc.

Light transmission and a varied color palette of the material contributes to the widespread use of polycarbonate as a roofing material.

Closed room with maximum light transmission

Pergolas covered with polycarbonate can be both voluminous and roomy, and very miniature, accommodating a couple of small benches and a table.

This material can be used to build pavilions of the most unpredictable shapes: from a simple canopy to a gazebo in the form of a sphere or dome.

Even if you have very little of this material left, you can fantasize an original structure by combining polycarbonate panels with other available materials.

Polycarbonate roof combined with a metal frame

Due to the ease of erecting polycarbonate, you can assemble a gazebo with your own hands in one day. It is easy to install, does not require special tools, as well as special professional skills. It is enough to inquire about some rules and recommendations for installation. Due to the lightness of the material, it is not necessary to erect a massive foundation for a polycarbonate structure.

Cozy resting place in an unusual round gazebo

Most often, the structures of gazebos are made of materials, the surplus of which remained after the construction of country houses or other buildings. But other completely unexpected raw materials can also be used.

Gazebo for giving from polished pallets

At the first stage, you should decide on the place of future construction, develop drawings and sketches of the gazebo.

They fix the dimensions and configuration of the structure, the dimensions are provided in such a way that the necessary furniture is conveniently located in it, which can also be easily assembled from pallets.

The diagram reflects the shape of the roof and the coating material. The number of fasteners is carefully calculated.

Pallet furniture combined with soft cushions

Choose such dimensions of the structure that would be as multiple as possible of the dimensions of the pallets. The standard height of pallets of any kind is 144 mm, but the width and length may vary depending on their manufacturer. Most often, pallets with dimensions of 1200 × 600 mm are used, the smallest samples are produced with dimensions of 800 × 600 mm.

Pallets can be decorated with bright textiles

The site on which the construction is planned is preliminarily cleared and leveled. A strip or pile foundation is suitable as the base of the gazebo, depending on the type of soil in your area.

For the floor, use a board for outdoor use, for example, a terrace. The support posts of the frame of the structure are arranged from a bar of a large section, a metal profile or reinforcing bars, taking into account what material you have in stock.

The walls and ceiling are formed from pallets.

Wooden pallets are perfect for summer residents who want to facilitate the construction of a gazebo

Any available materials can be used to cover the roof of the gazebo. Due to the good compatibility of wooden surfaces with any type of material, ordinary slate, polycarbonate, flexible tiles, corrugated board, etc. are suitable for the roof.

Pallets look especially cozy when combined with soft decor

When the design of the gazebo is installed, they begin to refine it. Do not worry that the pallet gazebo will not look attractive. Before assembling the structure, wooden surfaces are carefully sanded to a smooth state, treated with antiseptic impregnations, and then painted in the most acceptable color.

Building a gazebo from pallets does not take much time

The wood must be sanded before painting.

When painting, you can use acrylic paints. With their help, any drawing or pattern you like is applied to the walls. Designs painted in white look very elegant and elegant.

If the style involves leaving the color natural, the wooden surface of the pallets is varnished in several layers.

For the floor, protective compounds are used to prevent premature decay of the material.

Sanded pallets can be simply opened with varnish or oil

Pallet structures perfectly transmit sunlight, forming a soft, pleasant glow inside. You can create a thick shadow inside the gazebo by planting curly types of flowers around the perimeter: climbing rose, clematis or lemongrass.

Tarpaulin is used as a canopy

The final touch in the arrangement of the gazebo will be filling it with furniture. In such a gazebo, furniture made by yourself will perfectly coexist: from the same pallets, you can make comfortable chairs, a table or an original bar counter. The ready-made garden furniture will organically fit into this room. These can be options for soft comfortable chairs, sun loungers or rattan furniture.

Comfortable furniture will fill the building with coziness

If you supply electricity to the gazebo, you can place lamps along the walls, which will delicately highlight the structure in the evening. Do not be discouraged if you cannot supply electricity. Solar garden lamps can easily cope with the illumination, the choice of which is quite large today.

Armed with imagination, familiarizing yourself with the works of different masters and showing patience, you can easily create a gazebo from improvised materials of a unique design.

Types of mansard roofs

Today there are several options for roofs of the attic type, which have a different structure of the truss frame:

  • shed
  • gable
  • broken lines consist of two or more slopes with different slopes
  • hip ones have two triangular slopes on the short sides of the roof and two trapezoidal slopes on the long
  • half-hips have two short end hips above the front of the roof
  • domes are characterized by a round or polygonal shape
  • vaulted have an arc-shaped section.

A pitched roof is the easiest option to implement. They often turn to him when it is necessary to make an attic in a small country house. The most popular among other types of attic roofs of private houses, the photo clearly confirms this, is a gable roof. Its design and construction with your own hands is not difficult. Especially when it comes to the gable roof.

When choosing a sloping roof, it is possible to get a large, functional and comfortable attic room without additional work associated with the construction of walls. Today, many zealous owners of private houses prefer the rafter system of a gable roof for corrugated board, the construction of which does not need numerous technological and technical tweaks and an unreasonably high expenditure of funds for building materials.

The most difficult to install are hip, domed and vaulted mansard roofs. Their device requires a professional approach. These mansard roofs, photos of private houses clearly reflect this, have an unusual and very aesthetic design. They are characterized by a large number of sloping kinks, for which the device of valleys is performed. The rafter system diagram clearly shows the peculiarity and uniqueness of this design. The unsatisfactory condition of each of the valleys (internal corners) can pose a potential threat to the integrity of the entire roof.

A mansard hip roof of a complex configuration requires special calculations of the load on the foundation and walls of the building

Shed roof attic. Photos of successful projects

The simplest, most reliable and cheapest option is a mansard-type shed roof. The result is a custom-designed building. This type of roof is used for industrial and utility buildings. Also, it is often used for one-story small private houses. All roofing materials can be used here.

The design involves the creation of a window in the high part of the attic roof. There is no ridge in this design, which simplifies its installation. Mauerlat is fixed on the walls with different levels, due to which the bevel is formed. The beams rest on it.

The angle of the slope should be within 35-45 degrees. The smaller the slope, the more snow will accumulate on the roof surface, which will require the creation of additional supports and strengthening of the load-bearing beams. In addition, it will significantly reduce the attic space. The structure is able to withstand strong winds with the correct orientation of the roof slope, which is necessary to increase the stability of the structure.

Helpful advice! If the distance between the opposing load-bearing walls is not more than 4.5 m, it is possible not to mount the supporting elements, but simply lay long wooden beams on the walls. This further reduces the cost of roof erection.

This type of roof involves the use of simple elements to create ventilation of the under-roof spaces. It is enough to sew up two overhangs with a perforated soffit, or mount a ventilation grill.

A pitched roof is more resistant to atmospheric phenomena, but during construction it is worth considering the direction of the winds in this region

However, you should not choose a pitched roof for narrow buildings, where it is impractical to arrange the attic floor in this way.

Gable roof attic: construction features

A gable roof is the most common and rational solution that allows you to get a comfortable attic. Photos of houses with a mansard roof of this configuration confirm the demand for the design.

A gable roof is one of the most popular design options for the construction of an attic floor.

Do-it-yourself design and construction of a gable mansard roof does not cause any difficulties. It is formed thanks to two inclined planes (slopes), which intersect in the area of the ridge at a certain angle. Thanks to the correct choice of the optimal angle, you can create reliable protection of the building from heavy atmospheric precipitation, strong gusts of wind, excessive snow pressure during heavy snowfalls.

There are varieties of the configuration of the rafter system of gable skylights:

  • The symmetrical gable roof is the classic option, which makes it possible to evenly distribute the load on the load-bearing walls and roof support. The disadvantage of this design is the presence of sharp corners, which take away the free space of the attic.
  • an asymmetrical roof is a non-standard design, where the ridge can be displaced to one side. If one of the corners is more than 45 degrees, you get a fairly spacious attic room. However, the calculations should take into account the uneven distribution of the load on the Mauerlat and load-bearing walls.
  • The sloping mansard roof has the surface of the slopes, which are bent in the middle, forming edges that resemble two rectangles.

In the case of the construction of a mansard roof with a non-standard configuration of the rafter system, it is worth resorting to the services of specialists

House of stones

The dimensions of such a house are determined by the stones taken. Naturally, the decorative craft should not be too large, therefore, to make such a house, you need to take small stones of different diameters.

The ideal building material is sea pebbles, they are smooth to the touch and approximately the same shape, which allows you to form any structure out of it.

To make such a house, you need the stones themselves and silicone glue. The rest you will shape in the process. Just determine in advance the size of the house and the location of the door.

  • Take a base, in the form of cardboard or plywood.
  • Fix the first row of pebbles with glue.
  • Try to perform the subsequent laying with a dressing between the stones, according to the principle of brickwork, in order to increase the strength of the craft.
  • Leave the spaces for windows and doors without filling, they can be done separately using twigs or cardboard.
  • For the roof, you can take cardboard, and stick pebbles on it in one layer, and then this roof must be installed on a frame made of walls.
  • The craft is ready, there are a few touches left to decorate it and decorate the area around the house.

If the process of masonry from pebbles is too complicated, you can use cardboard and make a frame from it at home. After that, you need to stick the pebbles in a certain sequence, placing them as tightly as possible, to form the appearance of the house.

For the roof, you can take wooden slats, tree bark or any other material. In its finished form, such a house will look something like this:
