It is based on the rules of geometry and depends on the selected roof slope, according to the covering material, natural influences and the arrangement of the attic. The rise of the ridge is calculated according to the formula: H = ½ span width x tgα, where α is the angle of inclination of the slopes, and the span width is the distance between opposite supporting structures on which the rafters rest.

In order not to search for tgα on the Internet, there is a plate with ready-made values, which is convenient to use when calculating. For example, the width of the house is 8 m, the span is 7.14 m, the roof slope is 35º, then the height of the ridge rise is H = ½ 7.14 x 0.79 (coefficient 35º according to the table) = 2.82 m.

The second calculation method is graphical, where the algorithm for determining the height of the ridge bar is as follows:

  1. We draw a roof scheme on a scale convenient for visual perception, most often 1: 100 (1 cm = 1 m) and put all known values ​​on it.
  2. In the center of the span, at a right angle, draw a line upward, which will be the axis of the ridge's rise.
  3. With a protractor from the corner of the box, we postpone the planned slope and connect it to the ascent line.
  4. The resulting intersection point will indicate the height of the ridge bar.

    The graphical method for determining the height of the ridge requires the creation of a scaled roof diagram.

Similarly, the rise of the ridge is calculated, but not its height, since the latter depends on the compression of the wood, the method of fastening the rafter legs, the thickness and width of the ridge run, the depth of the cut, etc.

Therefore, in practice, they do it easier - to calculate the full height of the ridge according to any calculation scheme, ⅔ of the thickness of the rafter board is added to the lift value. If this is not done, then when attaching to the Mauerlat and connecting to each other in the ridge knot, the rafter legs will sag, which will entail a decrease in the slope of the roof.

Of course, such calculations are not flawless, but the error is insignificant and quite acceptable by regulatory enactments, in particular, SP 64.13330.2011.

Ridge additional elements

Roof skates are prefabricated devices inherent in both capital buildings and structures of small architectural forms. The most common are angular metal products with bends of at least 1.5–2.0 cm along the edges. The skates are completed with fasteners, seals and plugs, from which a sealed reliable structure is assembled, which prevents the roof from leaking.

  • universal accessory components made of polyurethane foam and working like a filter - allow air to pass through, but block dirt and snow;
  • profile products made from foamed polyethylene, which are selected for the specific shape and size of the ridge strips;
  • as well as self-expanding acrylic-impregnated polyurethane foam extensions with an adhesive layer and designed to fill any voids.

It is the seals that ensure the tightness of the structure, dryness in the under-roof room, the durability of all structural elements, increase wind protection, heat and sound insulation of the roof.

  5. We stretch the construction cord along the lower edge of the ridge ledge on both slopes in order to ensure the evenness and speed of laying the remaining elements.
  6. We mount the next plank with an overlap of 5–7 cm, aligning it with the cord.
  7. After all the elements of the ridge have been laid, we finally fix them with screws with a pitch of at least 80 cm.
  8. We install plugs, if required by the shape of the ridge products, which will give the roof a complete and well-groomed look.

Installation of a ridge on polycarbonate

High-quality polycarbonate bends easily, allowing you to mount beautiful arched structures without skates. However, it is often necessary to pair reflective sheets in the ridge area, and then the question arises of competently attaching polycarbonate to the ridge ridge.

Mostly for this, a polycarbonate ridge profile is used, which makes it possible to cheaply and conveniently arrange a ridge for almost any angle, but with observance of some features:

  • polycarbonate sheets cannot be mounted to the ridge rib end-to-end, otherwise a rather wide ridge profile without a gap of at least 40 mm will simply have nowhere to install;
  • it is advisable to fix a perforated tape on the edges of the polycarbonate near the ridge, which will allow moisture to pass through, but retain debris and dust;
  • light transmission sheets in the area of ​​the ridge along the edge are not fixed, since the installation of the profile implies its attachment to the supporting base together with the sheets;
  • It is advisable to insert the connecting profiles holding the transparent sheet cover inside the ridge element. If this is not possible, the connecting profiles should be cut, and the joints should be filled with a neutral curing sealant.

Installation procedure:

  1. We lay the transparent covering, leaving the necessary gaps in the area of ​​the ridge.
  2. We cover the ends of the sheets with perforated tape to ensure ventilation of the structure.
  3. Install the ridge profile and align it along its entire length.
  4. We check the depth of the gaps and, if necessary, correct it, preventing the ridge profile from touching the supporting base.
  5. We attach the ridge profile together with the upper edge of the polycarbonate sheets to the supporting frame with self-tapping screws.

    Self-tapping screws and special thermal washers are used to fasten cellular polycarbonate and additional elements.

Installation of a ridge on a slate

When arranging a ridge for a slate roof, regulatory enactments recommend the laying along the ridge ridge of additional bars of the same section as ordinary sheathing boards (SNiP II-26–76 * p. 5.4.8).

As a ridge element, you can use factory-made ready-made strips designed specifically for asbestos-cement corrugated coatings, but it is also allowed to independently manufacture additional elements from boards knocked down at an angle, treated with an antiseptic and fire retardant, or from galvanized iron. In the latter case, it is necessary to provide that the height of the ridge and its overlap on the slate reliably protect the roofing structure from blowing wind and snow.

The process of installing factory forming parts is as follows:

  1. We lay the shaped strips on the slopes on both sides of the ridge girder with the upper edges overlapping each other, having previously laid a roofing sheet 350 mm wide as a seal.
  2. We align in length and fix it through the wave with stainless screws or nails for slate.
